    Jeez!!!!

I've been a network administrator for over 8 years! Built countless networks for corporations and home owners. Linked wireless and ethernet, Windows 3.11, 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP.

But I just built myself a new PC with XP.

I can use my W98 PC and view the files on the XP box.

But from the XP box I can SEE the 98 machine, but when I try to open it I'm told I don't have permission, or the drive is unavailable. I've read on the 'net that this has been a problem, but I've never had it before - and I've setup many mixed networks.

When I first fired up the XP box, I WAS able to go get files off one of the other 98 PCs on my network. But now, from doing so much reconfiguring I can't even connect to that PC any more.

Yes, I've created identical user accounts on each PC, tried it with NetBEUI and without, I can PING the 98 box from the XP box, the XP box can surf the web and it pulls the correct IP address from the router. Yes file sharing is loaded.

Like I said, I've done this for 8+ years, and I really don't want to have to upgrade the other 4 PCs on my network to XP right now.

    Any ideas anyone?

I use my laptop with W98 to talk to the 2yr old XP machine I built all the time! Sometimes the W98 will not connect immediately and I've had to restart XP then it works. But other than that no problems! Have you downloaded all the upgrades for W98? Sorry not much help, tho! RV

Sometimes this works... on the xp machine make a Network setup disk which you can get to by running the network setup wizard. Run the disk on the 98 machine and you should be ok to go. Also check to see that the subnet mask is the same and ip addresses that are being used are within there ranges. I have found sometimes it is better when communicating with 98 machine to manually set the ip address.

*edit* I was on the phone and creating this post for so long that someone else beat me to the punch. :TU:

I think you have to run the " setup home or small office network " wizard on the xp machine, have it create the setup disks and then run them on the 98 machine.

I had a few issues with our network once i upgraded my work pc to xp instead of 2000 which was on the other 4 but running the wizard seemed to fix it.

    Hope this helps

Did you format your XP box with NTFS? If you did that is why the win 98 cannot see the XP box. NTFS can see fat but not the other way around.

    hope this helps

GET RID OF WIN 98 too much of a problem anyway

Dave, re-read my synopsis... The WIN98 PC can see AND gain access to the XP box. It is the XP box that can't get to the 98 machine. And yes, it is NTFS on the XP box. And I've not had this problem with other networks I've done... so your theory doesn't hold water there. This is a weird instance.

I did run the network setup off the CD into the 98 PC, so I suppose I'll try making a setup disk from right from the XP computer and running it on the 98 box.

possible damaged TCP/IP stack on one of the machines?

Almost sounds like you have a firewall installed on the Win98 box..... :Do No:

    disabled it already...

I don't think it is an ipstack issue... all my 98 pc's (4 others) still communicate OK, and they all pull a correct IP Address and all surf the net.

    Man, I'm really stumped here.:af:

The reason I bring up a damaged TCP/IP stack is that I have a 3 box home network. Two machines run XP Pro and one runs Server 2003. My personal use XP box could access both of the other machines, the other two boxes could access each other, but they couldn't access my personal machine. I ended up following a MS tech bulletin on how to reinstall the TCP/IP in XP and after that all three PCs could see each other on the home net and access all shared files.

I would also make sure all of your TCP/IP settings and net cards are the same for all of your networked computers. Also check the obvious, make sure simple file sharing is checked in folder options (not sure Win9x even has this), check permissions, etc..
