Yes I called Gateway - land of customer service - not! Yes sir, we have the part you need. No we can't sell it to you as it is not for user installation. :af: :blast: :af: . No, you can't ask my boss.

My kid pulled some keys off the key board. (nice) I found all the parts except the translucent cone that acts as a spring.

Anybody got any old gateways that they would part out? I need about 10 of the cones. This is a solo 2500, about 10 years old.

    I can't stand Gateway's in general. E-machines are better.

As for customer service, a few years ago I worked for a weekly newspaper. We upgraded to Gateways (4 of them). It took a month to get the machines running.

No special software, just Windows 95! We used notepad to write the stories, and sent them to the publishing company. It took Gateway a month to get that going for us.

Gateway is horrible for customer service. I won't go into it but let's just say the best way to fix a gateway is to get a dell.

    (4 Harddrives+one power supply+dead motherboard=closet shelf.)

Bill- If you sent me a picture of these cones, I may be able to give you some, I've got a few dead keyboards.

i know from a computer hobbiests point of view, a lot of the so-called user friendly computer systems built and sold over the last ten years have added greatly to the chances of me finding them in a yard sale after the novice owner finally gave up[IMG]
i used to fix these "chevy" computers for people but they end up putting so much money into them in the end they may as well have bought a good machine that didnt NEED customer support. i have built all of my own machines since my first 486/100 about a hundred years ago or so. try this web site for parts...http://www.starsurplus.com/
    or for macs...http://eshop.macsales.com/

I can remember when Gateway was known for their service. They sure have gone downhill. I have all Dells except for my server which I built. I have been very satisfied over the years with Dell's customer service and warranty. Last year my 21"onitor started flickering so I called Dell. The next morning I had a new one on my doorstep and an RGA for the old one. I will continue to buy from Dell.

I just bought a new Dell. I went to load in Office 2000. It told me my 25 digit cd key was invalid. I tried this about 10 times and it did'nt work. So I called Dell support. Believe it or not I got through right away. The customer service guy said that this was a common issue. He gave me a new 25 digit code and waited around to verify that it loaded OK. I was impressed.

A very important question to ask when buying any PC is where will it be warranty serviced? Case in point is the e-machiine which must be sent overseas for service with a long turnaround time.

I had a Dell laptop at a previous job.
We bought the 3 year warrenty.
About 3 years and 1 month later, it quit working. Something on the motherboard fried.
I called them, and the very next day they had FedEx at our place to help me box up the laptop and take it away. About 4 days later it came back good as new, and they even put a new monitor on it because the hinge was "weak".
What did all of this cost? ... and keep in mind, the warrenty expired a month previous to the problem....

    Nothing. It was absolutley FREE.

I've never been so impressed with service in my life. I buy Dell whenever possible.

    Bill,

I have a bunch of these cones/springs from different laptops. I think the ones from an NEC Versa will work for you. They are grey but look the same in shape.

Be more than happy to send them to you.

    Let me know your address.
