The OEM tires on my '63 LeSabre wagon were 7.60x15. According to Tire Rack, this translates to a 225/75/15 in modern tire sizes. That in turn translates to a 225/65/17. I want to run 17x7" wheels. I like my tires squared with the wheels, that is that sidewalls not being pulled in and the tire tread narrower than the wheel, and also the sidewalls not bulged out so that the tire tread is wider than the wheel. I like the tire tread and the wheel to be the same width. Having said that, is a 225mm tire width too wide for a 7" wheel?

Jon, I just recommended the Cooper CS5 in your other thread. I put a set on my 98 Riviera and am very impressed with these tires. BTW, the OEM rim on my 98, is a 16 X 7", and the tire size is P225/60R-16, so the answer to the above question is no.

Jon posting a pic of my Buick these fronts are 17x7 I'm running a 215/55/17 and I think this is the look you described. However this overall diameter is about 26.5 which is fine for the GS. The 225/75/15 is over 28" so if your looking for a taller tire I think your choice of 225/65/17 is going to look really good. Almost perfect the section width of the 215/55/17 is very close to the 225/65/17. So basically it will look very close just a taller sidewall giving you the height you're looking for. 20180622_145003.jpg

image.jpg image.jpg Here is a 215/60-17 on a 17x7 under my ‘60 LeSabre. That diameter is a hair over 27” (have 18x8 in rear 245/55-18 at over 28”). A nice roll to the sidewall and tread that is a bit less than the 7”wide seating surface.

So a 215 or 225 section width on your car should be the look you are going for.
