cray1801 Too much is just right.

I have a `72 Skylark that weights 3950 lbs with me in it (I'm about 175 lbs). It has a stock 4Bbl, headers, boxed rear control arms and a 3.42:1 rear gear with 255/60R-15's in the rear. Initially it ran 10.0's in the 1/8th. Here's what I did:

Replaced the stock converter with a TCI Breakaway ($169) --> 9.55 in 1/8th

Purchased a 800 cfm Q-Jet ($25) and an HEI distributor ($20)off ebay and sent them to John Osbourne to be re-worked (~270 for both). --> 9.2's (carb. only), --> 9.0's, 60' 2.03's (carb and HEI).

Have a leak-down test done, and if things are consistant go for some of these mod.'s.

Craig, is that with a stock cam?

I don't think the cam is stock but that does not mean it is better than stock  I say this because I did a dynamic compression check and the pressures were only in the 110 psi range with `72 stock compression. It had a lope when first fired up but smoothed out once warm. I shifted the car between 4600 to 5000 rpm's for reference.
