I have a 1950 Buick Special with a straight 8 engine, the car is in the first steps of being restored. The problem I have is the engine turns over, everything seems good except the engine turns over slow, it seems like it is just a tad to slow for it to start. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or know why it is turning over so slow? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

Ok, could be electrical. The starter may be going out, or the contacts on the battery cables are a bit corroded.

I would check the connections first, you may be able to get the starter bench tested. However, I think yours is 6volt, which may be hard to find someone that can test it.

Thanks for the reply, thats the exact thing I was thinking, I will be testing the relays switches ect to get a read on the volts in the next couple days. The starter seems to "click" kind of hard not sure if that is good or not, and yes it is 6 volt so I dont know who can test it I may just buy anthor, I am also planning on replacing the battery cables just as a future precaution the battery is brand new. I will post to give a update I appreciate your response if anyone else has any idea's please post them thanks!

If it turns over , it should start! They used to crank start those engines, so I would check my ignition system and also make sure it is getting fuel. My 1940 straight eight does not crank very fast, but has always started.

it is getting fuel already checked that, i am going to go over the ignition system thoroughly this week with a voltmeter, also changing the battery cables i am hoping this works if not I am going to replace the starter. It is so close to starting that its driving me nuts i cant wait to hear the engine :Brow: . Thanks again for your replies I really appreciate it

Change every wire/cable you can afford to. Electrical resistance is a big enemy, especially if your's is a 6 volt system. That's the first thing I would probably change. I know it is possible to convert from 6 to 12 volts, but I don't know much about it.
