i have a 58 coupe with a 364 and dyna flow, im looking at doing somthing with the engine , ive come across a 425 with a dyna flow , can anyone tell me if this is an easy swap ?or do i just reco the 364?,,,,im in australia so parts arent so easy to come across .
Depends, if the 425/Dynaflow is an open drive shaft, Or, Torque tube. Your 0buick has torque tube originally
This article may provide the information you are looking for. http://nailheadbuick.com/automatic-transmission-options-for-the-nailhead-to-get-rid-of-the-dynaflow As bhambulldog mentioned it will depend on the attached dynaflow. The 58 axle housing will accept a later diff head if that is the way you want to go but they are getting harder to find.
ok thanks , will have a look , i guess another op[tion could be to see if the 425 will bolt up to my currnet df thats behind the 364 in the car ...thanks for the info.murray
Or if you want a spare I have a 364 + Dynaflow out of a 61 buick here in Melb. I swapped to a 350 SBC and TH350 (yeah I know sacrilege) because my 61 is my daily driver and I do 160 K's round trip each day and Nailhead parts aren't easy to come by if she breaks down, SBC much easier. It's an original 50,000 mile motor and box and was taken out only a few months ago and was running at the time. if you can get the 425 in, that would be sweet, some nice dress up parts for the 425, none for the 364
hi chris , i think i may have spoken to you a few months ago , is your dyna flow , a torque tube version ?.....murray....i could be interested . i have another 364 that i know of in melb with no heads that i was going to buy , its allways niced to get a complete engine .....interested ...depends on the dyna i guess
The 425 engine will have an open driveline Dynaflow. The 425 was not available until 1963. By 1963, Buick had switched to an open driveline. I'm pretty sure the 425 will bolt up to the 1958 transmission. Doc will know for sure. The swap should be a bolt-in if you use the '58 tranny.
Just FYI '60 was the last year for the torque tube design. The '61 has a regular driveshaft, etc. HTH
Murray, yeah actually that rings a bell, you may have spoken to me, no mine doesn't have a torque tube it's an open tailshaft Anyway still here if your interested and not going anywhere soon. Rgds Chris
I always forget the cut-off on that. ..... ---------- Post added at 05:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:28 PM ---------- Including valve covers?
I know it's a long way to ship, but Russ Martin does offer a torque tube eliminator kit to fit '53-'60 Buicks if you decide to go that way. At US $1,095.00 plus shipping, it is a little expensive, but It is another option to consider. You can view more info about it here: http://nailheadbuick.com/drive-line-and-differential
Yep the entire complete motor and box. Everything. It was pulled from the car and set aside in the workshop (covered) as a running engine and trans.
yes thanks i have looked at this ,this might be the way i go in a year or 3 ,i havent had this car that long and i want to have some fun in it first (was just going to do a reco 364 and change it over on a weekend and keep going ,then the 425 was discovered ,but somtimes its just easier to stick with what u have but 60 more cubes gets me thinking ) , i know if i go down this road it could be off the road for months and then i probably couldnt help myself and then want to repaint it ,more money ....but thanks for the info ,greatly appreciated and thats why i joined this community .ive been a mopar guy for the last 26 years , know them backwards ,,,now im starting again ...murray ---------- Post added at 05:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:31 PM ---------- the only problem i would have is i would have a trans that i cant use and i understand you probably dont want to split them , .can i get your number ?i will call u if thats ok ....i lost it last time and your gumtree add ended ...murray
Happy to split em Murray. 0418 342 857 Do have a look at the 425 though as if it bolts up to your current trans they are an awesome motor and have way way more after market support than the 364s
Just use the 425 without the attached trans. It's a BOLT-IN swap. Motor mounts, all linkages, gauges, etc. will all bolt up as if you were swapping an original 364. Tom T.
thanks tom , thats exactly what i want to hear , i just wanted the extra cubes but not extra headaches , you have pretty well made my mind up for me .thanks murray
As Tom says you would be much further ahead to swap in the 425. Its a direct bolt in with the original 58 trans.
Chris, I was going to do the same thing with my previous project (swap engine for 350 and turbo 400) when the old straight 8 wouldn't start. Sold off the project and bought a 55 century with the 322. Had a vague plan concerning using the chevy motor in the 55. Once the car arrived, however, I fired her up and she ran so sweetly I couldn't consider it. Must admit, the cost of a rebuild would be considerable, but she aint dead yet, and anyway, I am a rotary guy, so the thought of rebuilding engines is always in the back of my mind LOL! Sure wouldn't mind a spare nailhead.
Installing a Chevy engine in a Buick is a mortal sin and is known to cause chronic Poison Ivy of the genetalia.
