I had my 401 heads ported at Mondello's in Crossville TN.
Matter of fact, they did the intire engine work, assembly and Dyno testing.
    Awesome work !
    Totally satisfied.

    jamhdit Just nuts about buick's

i had mine done by greg gesler, after reading the results off the comparison list. i have not installed in the car yet but mike from ta said when he fired it up it sounded pretty healthy. of course i did a few more things to the engine like the ta roller rockers. can,t hardly wait to drive this beast

Worked on the heads all summer and part of the fall. Just got the them back from the flow bench. I'm pretty geeked at the numbers this rookie (me) achieved! My numbers are the ones that specify "rookie". (see attachment)
Not sure if the valve velocity is good or not. Burned a whole bunch of "tootsie rolls" getting done what I wanted. I will be adding more to this build as I get closer and the money holds out.

did you also perform the oversized intake valve conversion (increased to 1.94") on your own?

I'll get better pictures as I go. The ruined head was caused by the mill dropping .060 during the final cut to take off .015. I had the head completely done. :blast: The guy doing the job (friend of an friend of a friend) completed the job on another head (Thanks Tim). Only lost about 40 hours of work....
The picture without valves are before the bronze guides were installed

Nice, really nice,,,,, like I always say,,,,, a guy can do way more than he thinks, if he will just try..... there will be very little difference in those heads and a pro done set..... not enough that you can tell by just driving the car....
Well done..... Oh , I am sure the nay sayers will put it down but look at the money saved and the experience you gained..... and the self confidence.... you now know that you have the ability and the skill to port a set of heads....and if you can do that , you can fix any part of that engine..... congratulations......:Brow: :Brow:

very nice looking work, did you get any flow numbers? What valve angles/seat widths did you use? Serdi machine?

I recently read that 70% of improvement is done in the bowl and valve-job and is about 25% of the over-all cost of an all-out porting job.

    Adam,
Flow numbers are on the previous page (attachment) My numbers are the ones named "Rookie".
3 angle valve work 45 degree 30 back cut, seat width is about .045 to .050
    Plenty of bowl cleanup,
    Manley Race Flow Valves (custom)
I did all the work expect installing the guides, milling, and the valve job.
The 1.94's fit without issue, but I did relieve the combustion chamber about 5 cc's, That was easily made up by the .015 mill, and TRW pistons, calculated compression ratio is 11.3 or so.
    ps
I'll post the actual flow sheet after I scan it in next week

I am located in the Southeast Michigan area. At the current time, I am concentrating on completing this 401 build, and work, and house and and and...:>

Can you expand on "fit without issue" - are you saying you get the 1.94 for "free" when the valve job is performed at larger diameter (0.065")? At a minimum i expect you have to open up the valve seats to handle the slightly larger valve.

Thx, and great job on your heads plus sharing the info!
