The 401 in my '62 Electra is equipt with dual exhaust using 2" pipe. This engine was rebuilt/modified before I bought the car and is equipt with a Edelbrock Carb, Carter Electric Fuel Pump and I suspect a hotter cam and overbore, and also has a petronix unit in the distributor. I put flowmaster super 40 mufflers on it a couple of years ago but have always wondered if going to a 2-1/2 or 2-3/4 inch pipe would significantly increase performance. Is it worth spending the money on? Motor runs great with current set up but wouldn't mind having a little deeper, louder sound from the exhaust.
