Are the engine mount and bellhousing dimensions the same for all bare block nailheads? Can I use a '55 '264 block to mockup for a 401/425?

    Thanks,
    Eric

I tink the 264 is gonna have a smaller bell housing pattern than the 401/425..... and the oil pan bolt holes will be different... the water manifold/intake manifold bolt pattern will be different and the crank flange and the deck height will be different, making the 401/425 engines higher and wider from the centerline of the crank....Tom will know of any other things that I have forgot.... exhaust manifolds will be different....cyl. head exhaust ports will be different....

The 53-56 had a 1" larger bellhousing diameter than the later 401......

Differences as I see them between the 264 & 401/425. But 1st. let me ask you before I go into detail what is this going in/to be used for???? The more details the better the outcome of details.

    Thanks all.

Tom... I just can't live with the LS1 in my '55. I need to go to a Buick engine and I'd really like it to be a nailhead. Slightly OT, I would like to keep the T56 but that's another story. I was wondering if I could use the 264 block from a parts car I have to work on the engine mounts specifically. I know the block is different up top, but I was hoping the bottom and the bellhousing was the same. This would have enabled me to work on building mounts while I search for a 401/425 to put in. The car has an aftermarket front clip in it, so the mounts will be completely fabbed.

Eric, I put a '59/401 into my '55 many years ago. The bell housing was not a problem since it was standard shift from the factory. I used a bell from a '57-'66, which is 1" smaller in diameter than the '53-'56 bell. On the engine mounts you will notice that the 264 uses 3 bolts on the block while the '57-'66 use 4 bolts. What I did was to take the rubber off the 4 bolt mounts & install the 3 bolt mounts to the 4 bolt mounts by drilling 3 holes & using the original mounts. The locations are the same just the 3 verses 4 bolts.

264 -322 are larger in bellhousing diameter then the 364-401-425 Nailheads. fwiw: My favorite Nailhead is the 264.

    John,

If you want to come take it out this weekend, you can have a '55 264 for free. One head has been off for many years. I'm in Brewster NY, not horrible far from Medway.

Actually you can come take the whole car if it's easier and you want any of the drivetrain, suspension etc. Body is shot. Trim, interior and glass I took for my car.

I know that this will sound that I am blathering, then making excuses, but I really do love the 264. If you have been following my posts - you may be aware that I have had back issues as well as foot surgery eight days ago. Moving engines is not an option for a while. I hope to be back in some kind of shape in a month or two, that's what the Doc told me this AM when he pulled the stitches out of my foot. If that happens, and anyone within a reasonable distance offers me a free salvageable 264, I will grab it.
