    Problem solved?

After replacing the Battery (700 Cold Crankin') and electronic Voltage Regulator i find, a bad PCV. Blowback in the aircleaner (mmm tastey oil for my air cleaner) She's breakin apart one piece at a time! Oh! and to top it off, my steering box is loose, i tightend the allen rench and then the bolt. still about 1.5 to 2" play in the weel! :af: so now i need a breather, a PCV, AND a steering box... :af:

Hopefully your charging woes are past! :TU:

Be careful about tightening up the allen-wrench adjustment on the steering gearbox. The gears tend to wear most at the straight-ahead position, and if you set the gear preload too tight, you'll have a lot of drag (too tight steering) at either "end" of the steering. Most times it's not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

Also, you can reset the bearing preload, which is the really big, flat "nut" that the steering shaft goes through. You loosen the steering column mounting bolts and disconnect the pitman arm so there's no bind, then use an inch-pound torque wrench to find the amount of drag at the steering wheel. It's more of a pain to do, but has a greater effect than the gear preload.

I recently did both on my LeSabre, and it made a HUGE difference in the steering - it no longer handles like a F*rd!!! :TU:

No idea where in CA you'd go, but if you can get ahold of a Chassis Manual (or post a new thread asking for a scan of the pages), you can reset the preloads to specs yourself, save a bundle, and that might be all you need.

Replacement gearboxes run something like $180-200...

If you don't have a Chassis Manual, get one!!! It's the absolute best money you'll ever spend on your car - General Information, Troubleshooting, complete Remove/Repair/Install instructions, all in one spot! :TU:
