My wife, and the van...

  1. Saturday, early afternoon, I'm just finishing up with some software installations at work, and my cell phone rings... my wife and 4yr old are at the mall for haircuts, and she locked the keys in the van. Not sure where parked, so I tell her I'll drive out there and give her my key. 5 hours later after haircuts and shopping:rolleyes: they come home, and she tells me that when she got out to the van, IT... WAS... RUNNING! :Dou: :spank: Well, it wasn't overheated, and had plenty of gas, so I don't think there are any serious consequences to it sitting running for about 5 hours... Is there anything I should be concerned with, other than my wife's :spank: ?

Is this the van that was spewing gasoline at one time?

    Nah, I think your ok.

It reminded me of twenty years ago at a party on an extremely cold night when my buddy went outside occasionaly to start his '70 Riv.(my winter beater later in life )
Anyways, he went out started it and came back in.
5-6 hours later we walk outside and it's still screaming away on high idle.

  3. That be the one... man, that was a scary sight in the driveway, with wife and daughter still inside after driving up!

I see you're pretty close to the great white north so she was probably just letting it warm up for a bit before driving home. Around here if you leave your car running in a mall or on the street the car thieves think its an early Christmas present. My boss started her van one morning a couple of weeks ago and then went inside the house - 5 minutes later its gone along with her laptop and briefcase.:ball: :ball:  The good news is our efficient police force recovered it 20 minutes later. The high speed chase and collision totaled it but she got her stuff back. Excessive idling can overheat exhaust, valves etc. but unless it was real hot that day you probably don't have too much to worry about. Cold weather up here in Canada means we let cars idle quite a while in the winter although 5 hours might be a tad excessive. :Do No: Just lay a heavy guilt trip on her and then casually drop hints about all those Buick parts you want for Christmas.

    guilt trip... wife

    Dave,
I have a wife and two daughters (18 and 22). There is no such thing as a guilt trip. Except for us when we come home with some new greasy or shiny treasure for our Buicks.

:( Oh great Doug! I've only been married 17 years with 2 kids (11yr old boy @ 8 year old girl) so every once in a while the guilt trip still works. Are you telling me it gets worse?:ball: The good news is I'm bringing my son up right. He walks, talks and dreams cars so most times its 2 on 2 at home.

  7. Nah, guilt trips won't work for me anymore, not since I spent $6500 on the GS last year... now SHE'S using the guilt trip method on me over the GS! When I buy parts I just have them shipped to my work, and I smuggle them home when I know she isn't there, like at noon when I come home to let the puppy out of the house... :Brow:

    You too huh.
I go by the garage logic 48 hour rule.
(This is from a local talk radio show called Garage Logic with Joe Soucharay)
    It reads as follows :Brow:

The 48-Hour Rule or You Had Your Chance" -
This rule was established on March 5, 2002 and is as follows: As a reward for a fellow sneaking new and inexpensive cylinders into the Crisis Center and also escaping any female wrath that might accrue from said purchase, the fellow may make up any story he wishes after 48 hours regarding the acquisition. In other words, she gets 48 hours to notice the purchase and complain. If she misses her window, you are home free.
This old thing, you might say, when, after a week, she finally does notice, that thing has been here since July.

    :bglasses:
The most recent was the fender skirts I bought off ebay.
Smuggled them home and put them on the car waiting for her to notice, heck they are blue and the car is cream.
A week goes by and as we head to the garage to go somewhere I said "Hey!, did you see the nice skirts I got off ebay?"
"No" she said and gave me 'the look' :puzzled:

End of story. It was a lot easier this way than explaining what I was going to spend a $100.00 on before I did so.

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

....for me, its ship them to my Parents. I commute to work, So, Im not carrying car parts etc on the train home....plus my parents are always home to accept packages. Mom's cool too.....she'll call my cell phone to tell me about a new "arrival":TU:

  11. That's the real reason I ship to my work, so I'm there to inspect the stuff at delivery...don't want the UPS dude leaving the goodies sitting by the front door or in the porch! But I DO try to take them home at noon, but I don't hide them actually, I just put them on a shelf as if they've been there all along, still in the box of course! Heck, I got a 7 blade fan & clutch a couple months ago, and the box is still sitting in a corner of the dining/computer room! I really should move that to the garage...before someone tosses it in the garbage. :Dou:

The tricky one was the alum valve covers I got from YO last winter...they came in a really BIG box, and you know, the bigger the box, the more $$$ you've spent, right? My wife doesn't know I spent about $150 with shipping... and now they've been replaced N/C with TA covers from YO, that I'm not likely to use...suppose I should sell them one of these days maybe, being I'm moving "up" to a 455 someday. They sure look nice compared to the Poston covers, but right now I'm happy to have repainted stock covers that don't leak :puzzled: unlike the Poston's...
