abotu 11pm on saturday night my friend phones and asks if I want to go to a party... in the woods. I say sure of course, where is it. They werent sure exactly but had some driving directions. about 40 miles north on the I5 from LA, down the N2 for 5 miles then take a small turning off there, then 8 miles down another road to a camp ground.
    Sounded OK to me.
Top down whistling down the 5 trying not to look too much at the beautiful star display above my head (I love driving at night with the top down). Get to the N2, not one car, pitch black and stars galore (no moon). drive down this listening to some weird music on the radio. Then the next turning comes. Take that smaller road. A sign post informs me that the road ends in 1/2 mile... but acording to directions I have 5 miles to go! Sure enough the made road stops and becomes a track of rubble, rocks, sand and huge pot holes. I bump up this road for another 3 miles, noting the small ridge of sand protecting me (not) from the vertical drop 6 inches from me. I can only imagine the view and landscape I am driving through. Come to the end of that track and see a sign pointing almost vertically up a sandy rocky track...surely I am not supposed to go up there...
oh yes.. my poor old buick bumping and grinding down this track. Trying to avoid the worst of the holes and the largest of the rocks.
Come the next morning on the drive back I see incredible views of the desert, the steep drops down, just how narrow that road was, and just how rocky.
Getting out of the car I see that the $30 I spent earlier on a full valet, wash, wax and detailing was really money well spent. My burgundy paint was now sandy paint coloured, my black tires were brown...
STill she came out fine, a few scratches to the paint which should rub out. Thank god I had my brakes fixed and a new transmission fitted the week before!

what a trooper that car is
