What an idiot. I wonder how many YEARS he's been using a corked bat. And who else has been using them.uzzled:
Yep, shame on him! "I use that bat for batting practice" - Yeah right! These bats shouldn't even be allowed in the major league ballparks.
Yeah, it is surprising that some of these athletes, who are very powerful physically just on their own merits of strength and training, are sometimes even more insecure than regular folks who make a fraction of their salary and get no recognition at their jobs. I suppose there's a fair amount of blame to go on the shoulders of the media circus that has turned pro sports into the fantasy land it is today. That doesn't excuse the guy for his actions on and off the feild, but it fascinates me that what is considered a storybook life (playing a game for a living) is too much pressure for some pros. Being a good athlete doesn't give you strength of character, I guess. This is one of the reasons I always liked hockey- the players seemed a little more rooted in reality. Of course the tragedy of John Kordic comes to mind easily...
corky sammy one of my young cousins hustles a few stands at wrigley feild...he sells the hats and shirts....his new t-shirts will have sammies picture with above caption reading ...CORKY SAMMY....
Hey Yuk, you need to flip those bats the other end up! ou: Very funny graphic though. I've never personally cared much for Sammy Sosa, too much showing off for my taste. But I have admired his hitting abilities, or at least I USED to. I don't buy the excuse being offered either. Come on, he's a professional, been doing the gig for several years. There's no way that he wouldn't have a way to identify that particular bat if he only used it for BP and exhibitions. Some kind of mark on it so he would always know which one it was. It's total baloney that it was with his game bats by mistake. I ain't buyin'. :spank:
could you imagine if Jerret won the winston cup, and the after inspection showed not restrictor plate. I wonder what would happen if the response was, OOPS, I was practicing without it and forgot. What a lame excuse.
... milly-vanilly just came to mind..... I myself lost interest in sports 20 years ago...they started showing the business aspect of it...2much...it has always been a business...but them mega-million contracts just turned me off...it took the sport out of it.... ..going 2 little league games is better off.....
It is amazing to me that an athlete or anyone would jepordize everything they have built up over the years by doing something like that. Just look at the Martha Stewert fiasco. She saved $200,000 in stock loses but loses millions by doing it! It just doesn't make sense. Mike D.o No:
I'm not a big Sammy Sosa fan, and I'm for sure not a cubs fan (I hate to say it, because they are one of the most pitiful teams in sports, but I'm a Brewer's fan:ball: ) however, I think people are making way to big out of Sammy using corked bats. Big Deal. This has been going on in baseball for ever. People try to cheat to get the edge over other people. it's just the way it is. Ask Chris Sabo (corked bat), Albert Belle (corked bat, and world class jag-off), ask George Brett (pine tar bat, first ballot hall of famer). on the other side of the ball, how about Gaylord Perry (he's put everything on a ball you can think of), or Phil Neikro (remember the nail file falling out durring the middle of the game).....my point is the list goes on and on. It's just a part of baseball.......... If you want to make a big deal out of something, how about all the Roids and amphetemene's the players are taking throughout the leauge, or the fact that it cost $100 for me and my wife to go the game. That's something to get worked up about. Brett
The Juice The talk around town is that he's OFF the juice. (Now that MLB has some half-a$$ testing program.) Needs that edge now that he's mortal again. That just rumor and speculation, however. No Proof.
i just read an article in my local paper that said that cork actually doesnt do all that much good and actually inhibits the power of the ball hitting the bat. the advantage of having a lighter bat and a quicker swing was offset by the absorbsion rate of the cork vs. hard wood. the study they conducted showed that corked bats actually were responsable for a couple of feet shortfall in a ball hit for distance against the same hit with an untampered bat. hmmmm......
Re: ... Thats about how I look at it. College, High School, and the younger kids leagues are what is fun to watch for me.
It's only cheating if you get caught. Sammy got caught. I don't think there are any pro athletes that don't cheat in some way. Some are better at hiding it than others. I think a tarnished image is enough punishment and a big ass fine of course.
Interesting findings! I always wondered if the cork actually made any significant difference. I had heard MLB had all 70 of his bats X-rayed....all came back negative. Just that one bat apparently.....o No: So I guess his explanation is at least a possibility.
