on a more serious note : now is the time to start looking over machine shop options , ask questions , check the shop out , make sure they do things the way YOU need things done . outline your goals ( really - i mean with paper , pen n calculator) , do your homework , have a gameplan .
might have an extra cover ? start a thread down in "parts wanted" too .

Yea the cam timing gear is gone :ball:.
Del I have a really good machine shop out here that listens very well and has done a great job on my 455 in the past.
My engine builder is great too. I was really happy finding this guy who listens and knows buicks like he does chevy's.

Good luck on the build. At least you can take some satisfaction knowing that you bought the package for a good deal.

if u have the chassis service for your car, take it along to the rebuilder so that he can familiarize himself with the buick engine specs.

So I got the motor out today. After removing the intake I could see major damage. The cam is broke in 3 places and 2 pushrods are completely bent. I don't know if the cam messed up any of the journals, but it looks pretty bad.

 I'm guessing what ever caused that could also easily break a timing gear.

Sounds like a good time to drop in that 455. $900 huh, do you sleep ok at night? You stole that car! Congrats on that find. That engine i am sure is why the car was as cheap as it was. Sounds like someone dumped some coin in the car to make it look good and then damaged the engine, they most likely had no knowledge of mechanics and was just looking to dump it cheap. With that much damage i am willing to bet the valves are bent, pistons may be damaged and who knows what the inside of the block looks like.

My buick 350 shut off on me once out of nowhere, it turns out the distributor wouldnt spim, I rebuilt the oil pump and checked cleareances on the gears, they had locked up. I ordered a cheap replacement from rock auto and looked and worked great, might be that
