I didn't think the show was too bad. They picked cars that they had in stock at Legendary. It might have been fairer if they went elsewhere for the cars and used all hardtops and all with the same trans (auto or stick). Still, I found it fairly entertaining. I know one thing- I wouldn't mind doing what Peter Klutt does for a living! He started that business in his parents garage! Todd
Somewhere in the show they mentioned something about the Summit F.A.S.T. fast series being wone the last three years by a Buick. We all know who that is. Way to go Greg Gessler.
Nice to see that Legendary put up their own cars for this event. The only thing I can say about it all is that it was very subjective. What are burnouts objectively? Some of the cars were also obviously not well prepared. Why take something to this event with a poor clutch or a poor working shifter? I feel that they did not properly"bed-in"the brake pads-witness how the LS6 stopped well and the GS and other A bodies did not do so great. The candidates chosen were not all that fair. How can they include a 429 Mustang and not a ZL1 Camaro? How about a COPO car or a Stage2 Buick? I guess it was whatever Peter Klutz and Tom Heehaw had in stock at the time.Likely the selection was based on the cars that have not sold in a while due to the rather substantial prices that Legendary affixes to them. All in all it was good to see a GS included even if a heavy ragtop with AC and a motor that did not sound all that healthy. Rod
The show was to compare 7 of the fastest cars from the era. So, why not get a true representation of cars for this test? It was a test, not driving on the streets back in the day. Tests are for producing accurate results. It was not accurate this time. If all were more evenly matched, who knows which would have been #1.
Wow! I can't believe all the belly aching going on here. Can't everyone just enjoy watching rare muscle cars get beat on? How many times have any of you back out of a race because the guy next to you isn't in a 4-speed or a convertable? Give it a break!
More ranting happening on SpeedTv website. http://insider.speedtv.com/viewtopic.php?t=49257&sid=4cf6c454e2fc369690020af8b9c36194 I was out golfing and didn't get to watch it as the course has directtv and they didn't have speed. I will search to see if it is being replayed Troy
1416 yes, but 232 Stage1s (164 TH400s). I enjoyed the show. Not counting the burnouts, I believe we were one point behind the leaders (Chevelle/Ford). I'm not into Mopars, but they could have at least replaced the clutch before testing the car - the hemi was short-changed! We did great where it counts, with probably the heaviest car (and 3.42:1 rear). I'd take A/C any day over a point :beer ...and I'm no longer unhappy about running a 14.501 and a 14.505 my first time on a track. These 'experts' ran a similar car 13.9. Just wait till I get a good launch with the clutch :Brow:
B!TCH, B!TCH, B!TCH!!!! What a bunch of little girls!!! Yes, the convertible Stage 1 took third. It had the top 1/4 mile and did very well in the solom...:moonu: :moonu: :moonu: Was it fair, sure. We could have Greg Gessler driving, but for what it was,the test was it was great. I do not know if I could have done any better.:moonu: So quit complaining about the vert or the what if's. The ran what they had in the showroom. No ringers, no tricks, no special drivers. And I did hear the Stage 1 chirp the 1-2 shift!!! And loosing to the LS6 and 429 is not that horrendous!!! At least it was not the AMX or the Hemi. And we lost by 1 point (if my memory serves me correctly). If you want to b!tch join the Mopar camp:moonu: . They got royally HOSED!!! Suck it up and be proud that at least our GS's were affordable and DID DO VERY WELL!!! Michael
gs4u2c hit the nail on the head. FYI, here's some other opinions. As Herman's Hermits once said, "Different verse, same as the first!"
A few observations about the Mopar site After quickly reviewing all the Mopar guys had to say I only noticed one thread response mention the Buick. Must be invisible to the Mopar crowd. One guy lumped together all 4 GM engines. Does he think they are all the same engines? ou: Dude - each brand had its own engine back then. I guess he doesn't realize that Dodge, Plymouth, and Chrysler DID all use the same engines. :TU: to the Buick for holding its own. :spank: and :moonu: to Speed for not doing a better job making this a more even showing. If they are going to include a burn-out contest I must ask: "where is the bikini contest?" :Brow:

Maybe in Musclecar shootout 2 if we get everyone to stop whining about it. Who knows, maybe they could get a whole series out of it! Maybe we could have a muscle car version of top gear (you british guys know what I'm talking about). YES!!!!
I thought the show was great! I think it would be difficult to find factory stock versions of all those cars anymore. And every brand represented has something they could complain about. The GTO was a Ram Air 3, not a 4, the Hemi had a bad clutch, the Olds had no power steering, the LS6 had 3.31 gears, the Buick was a air convert. I thought it was great entertainment if you didn't take it TOO seriously. I like ALL those cars out there and was glad to watch all of them screaming! They all sounded great!
I have it on my DVR. Easy to copy if you really want me to. PM me if you do. I agree it was fun and shouldn't be taken too seriously.:TU:
Send me a copy at "mechacode[at]gmail[dot]com" if you can or the link if you have it uploaded somewhere.
Food for thought... Maybe Pete picked the GS droptop to handicap it. I am sure he knows about past shootouts with a Stage. There are far more Chebbie and Ford fans out there. We all know that a '70 H/T with a 3.64 gear is dangerous. As a matter of fact early in the show when they profiled the GS, I think Hnatiw mentioned that the GS won every year at some shootout up north. And maybe, as far as the Hemi goes... well, how do we know for sure that the clutch was slipping? He is partial to those also. I must say it was exciting to watch all of the cars do what they were meant to do. Pete beat on them good. I just wish it was me doing the driving. What a job! All of those cars are great examples of period automobiles. Probably the most exciting period that ever was and will be. I would take any one of them. If anyone has a friend from the other camps complaining about 1/4 mi. times, just have them refer to the "50 fastest" list. It speaks for all of us. Mike '72Staged
