Hello everyone. I am going to replace my exhaust system, front to back and I need some help making a decision. I am planning on going with TA Comp. headers but I don't know what mufflers would sound the best. Right now I am running stock manifolds and dual flomaster 40 series on my 70 GS350. I love the idle I have now (basically stock motor) but I want it to really open up when I put on th gas. I am looking for a better sound and increased performance. However I don't want my baby to sound like a chebby. I need to find a setup with a fairly mellow idle but will let it all go when I want it to. The sound I am kind of looking for (so you have an idea) is like the GSX on the Gardner Exhaust website (gardnerexhaust.com). I am just wondering what setups you guys have with the TA headers and if you like them. Like I said before....I want it loud but I don't want to wake my g/f parents when I sneek away at 2am.:Brow: Any and all help is great. Thank you!

    Gary,

I have Super Comp. headers going into a 3" Dr. gas X with 2 1/2" out of the X to DynoMax mufflers. Awsome power and a great sound.

Gary, I have Spin Tech mufflers on my 72 and I have never had any one complain about the sound and a lot of compliments. A very agressive sound at idle but reasonable at crusing speeds. As a matter of fact they get quieter the faster you go.

I also forgot to ask what kind of work is involved changing from manifolds to headers? Like what needs to be done to the carb/engine if anything? And lastly, what is better....a X pipe or a H pipe. I read in the Sept,Oct 2002 GSXtra about the power-X headpipe system. Any thoughts on that and with a 350 hi-comp. engine would there be any difference between a 2.5 or 3 inch system. I may sound dumb but everything I read is about 455 Stage 1 engines. Don't find too much for us little guys. Thanx again!

Gary adding headers may require you to change the jetting on your carb since you may end up on the lean side. The X pipe is the better choice to go with. I'm no expert here but I would stick with the 2 1/2" mandral bent pipes. Some one may tell us here why 3" may or may not be a better choice.

go with 2 1/2 inch... 3 inch is gonna be to big, and you'll lose velocity, and scavenging effect.
I had the flowmaster 40's with stock manifolds, and then swapped to the TA headers. The headers defiantly made the difference between sounding good, and sounding badda$$! Idle sounds good, when you open it up it makes noise.
When I installed mine, I did it the same time that I swapped on worked up heads. So I took the old heads off with the manifold still attached. Taking off the old manifold are where it's gonna be tricky... I avoided that... Getting the new headers in is pretty easy. Jack up the car pretty high. And send them up from underneath. If you don't already have them go buy a set of racthet wreches!!! They will make tightning the bolts alot eaiser. Craftsmen has a nice set for like $30, one of the best investements I've ever made. The TA headers fit like a glove, no crazy hammerwork, or frame grinding needed that I've seen with other headers on other cars....

I like my Magnaflow mufflers. :)

If you haven't gotten the idea, we all seem to have a different preference on mufflers.

Thanx for all the ideas and info. I might end up keeping the flomasters...who knows. I know of a muffler shop that will put on as many mufflers as I want so I can get a preview of them. But I'm still a long way away from working on the exhaust. I've had half of the trunk stripped and ready for paint for a few months now. Things would go a lot faster if anyone would want to contribute donations to a poor college student (hint, hint)
