Mt. St. Helens Magma Reaches Surface Posted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday October 12, @11:57PM from the feeling-hot-hot-hot dept. daquake writes "Volcanic rock has flowed to the surface of Mount St. Helens' crater, creating a new lava dome after weeks of seismic activity, the bulge had risen at least 330 feet since scientists noticed it September 30. Geologists said there is still a chance of explosive ash eruptions from the 8,364-foot mountain, and the immediate area around the volcano remained closed." bla bla bla http://slashdot.org/ has the story. I just wonder why the government doesn't do something about this??? They could easily of dropped a few bunker busters on the sucker a while ago or even now. Poke a hole in that sucker and let out some pressure. But no everyone just stands back and waits to watch it blow, like we are powerless. It will then level everything around it. Dump million of tons of ash that cost billions to clean up n fix. Just sink a missile in that sucker and vent it.
How bout sink some lines in it and harness the geo-thermal power.....bet it could power half the nation !!
Ya think? I agree with you. I can see it now. The president decides to drop a missile on the volcano and susequently get blamed for everything that happens afterwards. Besides, where is the actual science behind this idea to justify it in the first place? Something tell me that billions of tons of molten rock bulging up from the earths core under solid rock with multiple surface tension throughout is a little more complicated than popping a water blister on your hand after raking leaves. I wish it were that simple.
A volcano is liquid rock, and an explosion is basically concussive hot air.. not going to do much. Even if we somehow managed to collapse the magma chamers the lava just melts new ones right away. Bunker busters are great for making chunky salsa inside concrete structures, they are not geological manipulation tools.
Well if anything the EPA should step in and fine the mountain for not meeting state mandated exhaust emissions ou:  ou:
rain I would like this Sunday to be nice, possibly the government could sprinkle something in the clouds to make this possible - I think there is already someone that takes care of the nature stuff....maybe talk to him
It's really not a bad idea. It could be worth a try. A strong enough explosion could expedite the natural course of things. They could evacuate the area and give it a try. But who would want to be responsible if it DID work and it leveled half the state?? Not very smart, politically, I guess. o No: o No: o No: o No:
Are you assuming that politicans (sp?) are smart? Haven't seen one yet that doesn't lie, cheat and scheme...but that's our system and we have to live with it.
