Motorcyclist was full of life

A life cut short.

That's how the family of Robert Carl Weakland described his death as they gathered in a north Topeka home Sunday afternoon.

"He was full of life, that's for sure," said his uncle Gary Weakland.

Robert Weakland, 24, died Saturday night after the motorcycle he was driving apparently ran a red light and collided with a pick-up at the corner of 15th and Adams, said Topeka police.

The 24-year-old graduated from Seaman High School in 2000. Referred to by his uncle Gary Weakland as a "gearhead," he was always working on cars.

He attended Kaw Area Technical School while at Seaman and was employed at Burlington Northern as a sheet-metal worker for the past three years, said the family.

He had just started working out at Capital City Combat where fighters learn mixed martial arts, the type seen most often in the caged matches of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and he had always been into drag racing.

"He was living life to the fullest," said Gary Weakland.

The love of drag racing came from his dad, also Robert Weakland, who has driven in National Hot Rod Association events including ones here in Topeka.

Gary Weakland said his nephew had always wanted a motorcycle and had recently bought his first, a 1995 Honda 900 RR. He was riding that bike eastbound on S.E. 15th Street Saturday around 8 p.m. when he apparently ran a red light and collided with a Mazda truck driven by Bruce D. Askren and traveling southbound on S.E. Adams Street.

The crash left Weakland and his motorcycle in the northbound lane of Adams. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Askren, 46 of Topeka, was taken with non life-threatening injuries to a local hospital.

The impact sent tools from Askren's truck bed flying, including a horseshoe that crashed through the windshield of a northbound car. The driver of that vehicle was not injured.

Police spokeswoman Kristi Pankratz said Saturday night that toxicology tests would be performed on Weakland and Askren
