TV. The next time they mention patina I’m changing the channel, which will be in two seconds. Hate patina. Lazy way out
Agree 99% - there are exceptions, but it's not the rule for me. At the very minimum, wash and vacuum your car...
If I bought an old, as factory-built collector car that was as totally original as humanly possible and in great shape, a thorough cleaning and polishing would be fine. Otherwise I agree with Matt.
I don't watch Motor Trend very much. So, I don't know for sure what the criteria is for patina. My opinion, If a vehicle is effectively original, clean, with straight sheet metal, maybe a few very minor dimples. I am 100% leave it alone. Even if it had faded paint and primer. Like my antiques, leave it alone people (not all) will appriciate the unmolested originality and aging over time. If it needs a fender or other major body work, paint it. Make it right. Again, I don't watch Motor Trend except maybe clips, but those are my thoughts.
We all have our preferences and that's one of the things that makes this hobby great. I like patina in some cases. I have a couple of cars with paint that has lots of wear, fade, nicks, and bruises. I can use and enjoy those cars without worry and have no plans to repaint them. It is not an indication of an inability to afford a paint job, nor does it mean that I'm too lazy to repaint my car. It's just my preference for these particular cars. I am not a fan of the fake patina where people simulate it.
I’m not really into building cars for the purpose of patina. But I have no problem with someone enjoying a ratty muscle car. I enjoy a good barn find as well. I have a 72 nova that is not nice I play with while I’m restoring my Buick. I’ll get to the paint on it someday but for now it scratches the itch.
For sure are exceptions if done right. Don’t know about clear coating over it. But there is a product out….actually a few that seems to really work well. Malco Paint Rejuvenater. Looks promising. But just leaving the crusty, rusty, dull paint and calling it patina turns me off. old original painted advertising lettering say like on a tow truck and such that’s not perfect if “restored “ correctly, sure. But put some effort into i! That’s the difference. Using patina as a excuse shows…not fooling anyone, car people know
I have seen some guys use patina to look as a Street Sleeper. Look at that raty old car, even the exhaust is rusted and leaking. What they don't know, Under the hood is a mean hot rod engine, the rusted leaky mufflers are hiding a high lift cam with lots of duration. Off the lights, he blows all those shiney muscle cars away. Now, I'am not a fan of patina but I have seen patina street sleepers. These guy spend their $bucks on drivetrain not on body and paint. Vet
a large % of peeps live pay check to payheck, not all have 6 figure cars ,enjoy what u have or can afford, also do u think the 6 figure folks has taken some of the fun out of the hobby as ,driving your x to the nats and crusing BG days r over??????????
Being in the Resto business I LOVE when a car, ANY older car comes in, in original condition (kinda rare) I get to see and experience first hand THE CAR as it was back in the 60’s or 70’s untouched by a body shop. To me it’s a privilege to see and or work on the car as it left the manufacturer. Two cars come to mind, one is a ‘72 Olds Cutlass, I resprayed that one in its original light blue. Another coming up soon is a ‘70 Challenger B5 blue 383 with the N95 (96?) option (ram air hood/scoop)
the glory days of bg have been replaced with the new glory daz,I was there in 81 for the next 20 years, really had fun,but things change or die so u new guys keep it going, and Richard needs the money.heh, heh
I thought patina was for the antiques road show, or Bob vila. I think one exception is for anything made of wood that has a stain or urthane finish. Maby motor trend is just trying to sound cool like the way writers have stupified hot rod mag. Or retards on ESPN calling touchdowns tuddies.
Back in the early 90's when I was restoring a 68 GS400 coupe it had one blue fender, one brown door, one yellow door and the quarters were primer black after being replaced and the rest of the car was original Scarlet Red paint. I got more interest in that car than after it was completed with a beautiful Scarlet Red paint job. People seemed to be drawn to it when it was a mishmash of parts.
I have a couple of nicely painted rigs and a couple of patina cars. To each their own. Some folks like the weathered look, and they are sure easier to drive around here.. I've got miles and miles of dirt roads to contend with.
