Have some more crayon info for you concourse guys. I realize this may be redundant however it is good historical data from an original car. A friend of mine is planning on restoring another guys 71 GS 350 convert. When looking at the firewall we noticed markings on the firewall under and near the voltage regulator on an AC car. Crayon color is either white or faded yellow cant tell. There is 11 then B next to it. This is the exterior color and top code White/Black There are no interior codes or anything else. Car was not a disc car so no brake info. This car looks to be an untouched original made in Flint. One interesting note is that the "B" looks to be written by the same guy that made the B on the Lime mist GSX photo on another thread. The "B" has that overlapping sweep at the bottom. I did not photograph this as car is not apart yet so it is hard to see.

Not in '71, Jim. Code 11 was Artic White in that year.

Check this out. I was going to put the markings back on my ragtop, but when i looked at pictures for placement I decided not to. A guy would have to put it back exactly to be correct, but it looks like total crap. Guy that did this must have been drunk!!!!!

65 T, flame orange with sandalwood top. the T is there but very hard to make out. Thought you might get a kick out of it.

If that be the case and the paint number was changed for 71 you are spot on.

Yep the mark is def an 11 which matches Data plate and color Artic White. And to previous reference to worker being drunk maybe it was a Monday morning car. Just kidding, but to be original it should be put back this way. It is mostly hidden by accessories anyway. I know what you mean though as my engine sticker on the radiator cover was put on crooked. No way I will put the new one on crooked.

My car is also a Flint car built 01D. I wonder if some union guy had the title "Firewall Crayon Marker"?

Probably but now he is home retired making drawings with his crayons and wondering if his GM pention is going to evaporate into thin air.

Does that 71 GSX have an original vinyl top? Must have been special order. I remember seeing a silver 71 GSX with a black top that a woman owned in a magazine years ago. I think I still have it. I remember that Buick gave her a hard time about building it but the dealer insisted and it was built. Cool!

That woman that owned that '71 GSX was Vicki Jo Irvin. I remember seeing her with that car for many years at the GS Nationals. It's been a number of years that I haven't seen her or her car. Anyone know the whereabouts of her?

Vinyl tops were a regular option with the '71/'72 GSX since the "GSX" package was an option (different than 1970). Many of the '71/'72 GSX cars came with vinyl tops.

    Hey Mike-

How many of them have you seen in the course of reproducing window stickers? I was under the impression there were less than a half dozen known. I believe it specifically stated on the order form "not recommended" with the GSX package. Can you confirm from an original order form? I'm guessing you probably have a form in your collection??

    Thanks!

    Ken,

Maybe I should not have said "Many" and should have said "more than a few" came with vinyl tops :Do No: At least 5 or 6 of the 15 or less '71/'72 GSX's that I have seen have had vinyl tops.

'71/'72 GSX info is very hard to find and I don't even know if separate order from even exists for a GSX (other than a '70). I have never seen any factory order information for the GSX option, most of my window sticker GSX info came from original GSX stickers from those years that I have photographed at shows, etc... I do have a copy of a '71 GSX window sticker that was ordered with a vinyl top and it is shown as a regular option code, not SCO.

    Have you seen this info

    Thanks Mike!

That's probably where I read that. I believe that same memo is posted in the Dove book. Interesting that about a third of the ones you've seen had vinyl tops. You know, back in the 80's I really didn't like that top at all. Now I think it adds to the cars appearance.

Also, I think you are correct, that there was not a separate sheet for ordering like '70 as it was no longer a separate model. I guess there must have been a check box on the GS form?

    Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

    Ken,

That is the weird thing, no check boxes on the GS order form for any of the GSX options, hood tach or spoiler. All of those options could be orderd individually :Do No:

There must be something around that the dealer used to order those parts, I just have not found it yet...
