i know rear end questions have been beat to death over and over on here . would it be a dumb idea for me to ask you if you could make some rear end stickies? like rear end ids. identifiying open and posi. gear ratio choices for different cars. opinions on c clip eliminators and at what point you need upgraded axles. and or cover girdles. i would love to sit and read some of your knowledge on this stuff.
    :beers2:
    thanks

God, I wish I could write a BOOK. BUT this is such a freight train time of the season and I am right in the front of the engine. There are many different indications when you should up grade and start using aftermarket strength parts and how far you should go before upgrading to the next rear diff size, etc.

Best defense from any rear catastrophe is to have a good set-up. Big parts expensive parts etc are all for not if it is installed wrong.

After 40 years almost all rears will need a rebearing at the very least. THIS is a huge problem when restoration to the motor and tranny are done and most run out of money to deal with the rear. lol.

OR most by a bigger rear that is 40 years old figuring just because the size increase even used it will be better than the rebuild smaller stock rear. THAT IS A BIG WRONG THOUGHT. :)

If you are track bound then thoughts of strengthening up the rear should be considered especially with BIG CUBE MOTORS and high torque out put.

I try to make it to the GM shows in the OHIO area ... I would LOVE to babble on about rear diffs and help you all brainstorm ideas for your rear diff builds.

So for now I have to continue to answer questions as I can on all the GM sites. Just do not have enough time to lay down the dos and don'ts of rear diffs yet. Besides I still have tons to learn yet. YES that is correct ALWAYS learning. Physical list of casting numbers part numbers rear diff specs etc. constantly running into something new - to KNOWLEDGE that is. :0

how long would it take a man to break a stock 8.2 with welded open 2.56 with a mild 455 build up with street tires about a launch or 2? my brother keeps telling me to weld the spiders till i have time to go get the 8.5 from mark(carmantx) and get a posi in it... i think he is crazy. buick torque would probably break something quick. (he says if you can with a 350 chevy pickup you can with that car) HAHAHA!

my 8.2 posi lasted about a year of driving / a few trips to the track after upgrading to a stage1 462 and KB118 cam. Put a stock 8.5 posi in it ... lasted a bit longer until I upgrade the motor again and blew spider chunks

... the two tows' home cost me about 1/2 of the cost of building the 12-bolt in it now - add in the price of the two rears and :Dou:

With street tires, it will last forever. Spinning the tires doesn't stress the rear nearly as much as hooking it up solid in a heavy car with a lot of torque.
