What is the best way to set the idle mixture on an Edelbrock 750. I have to have the idle higher than I'd like so that it doesn try and stall when dropped into gear.

And I don't have the power I'm used to.

    I'm all screwed up, in .... ??

Your problem is you don't have enough initial timing. You should be running at least 12*. If the timing is retarded, it forces you to turn the idle adjustment in too much possibly exposing the transfer slot in the carb, and the idle mixture needles won't have any adjustment. Get your timing right first, then adjust the carb. You may need to have your distributor recurved. THen turn the needles in and out until you get the highest vacuum reading on a gauge.

There are actually two other ways to adjust the mixture. One is with the use of an exhaust gas anslyzer, to which you adjust for minimum HC's. The other way involves a tach calibrated for low speeds. Using this unit, you would adjust for maximum lean idle speed. The vacuum gauge is somewhat difficult due to the typical calibration of the gauge face. Ray

With respect to the low idle, it is also possible for the incorrect convertor to be pulling the idle down far enough to stall the engine due to incorrect stall speeds. It would help to know the park and drive idle speeds. This would assist me in troubleshooting the problem. Is there a problem with the idle circuits on the carb? Ray
