This was auctioned in Melbourne last night. Fetched $23,500 in USA dollars, $31,000 in ours.

Was described as mint, but can't recall the stated mileage in the pre-auction description and photos - which were taken down overnight.

What makes it rare was the fact it was right-hand-drive from new.

Almost certainly the car was delivered to Australia in a ''CKD'' (completely knocked down) kit, assembled at a General Motors Holden factory and the right-hand drive conversion farmed out to specialist engineering workshop. Chevrolets and Pontiacs were far more common, but right to the turn of the 1970s, most GM marques got an occasional as-new import here via that method.

And yes, the Star Wars air cleaner was present and correct under the hood.

Would that be a good deal in the USA? This one last night fetched almost double what an identical one fetched here in 2010 ($17,000)

Hard to compare that exact car to the USA market because the right- hand drive would certainly affect value in Australia to the positive. To me that is a great deal in Australia.
The car is far from mint but the body, chrome, paint and interior appear excellent which are big ticket items. The engine bay can use some TLC as well as the trunk but those are lower cost and easy DIYS projects. Taking the right-hand drive out of the equation, I think $23.5 would be little high in the US due to the engine and trunk condition. If the engine and trunk condition matched the rest of the car then $23.5 would be about right.
