well im not a complete moron but why do they call the mid sixties motors nailheads. me and my father in law dont have any idea. thanks Ray ________ Porn hub
If you have a nailhead: Take a look at the engine. You see how the falve covers are vertical as opposed to Diagonal? Buick needed a way to fit wide v8's into engine compartments designed for smaller motors (Straight 8's I think) I'm not sure how to internals work but basically the valves are small and Nail-like.
In all honesty, the valves are really all THAT small. They look OK in size to me. Anyone know the valve diameter specs for a 401 or 425?
1.875" intake & 1.5" exhaust. Kinda small, but up to the task at hand. Need to keep the low RPM torque up to get our sleds to start movin'.
[bob raises hand] okay, my name is bob and i'm not a complete moron either ... but i would like to know from you nailhead guys: what visual cues do you use to differentiate between the the nailheads? and i mean all of em, not just the 401/425. there's also 364/322 and 264. i'm looking for things like number of valve cover bolts, oil filter placement, etc. easily verifiable external differences on the outside of the engine assembly that you don't have to have a casting # book to know what they mean. i know the nailheads have the dist at the back of the engine and i'm assuming an engine with a 2x4 setup is gonna be a 425.
:Smarty: Measure between the front bolts of the intake manifold, center-to-center.... 8-1/4" is a 264 or 322, 8-3/4" is a 364, and 9" is a 401 or 425.
