Are they really needed with an X-pipe if all the other tubes are Mandrel bent? Can I just get regular exhaust shop tailpipes? There was a little blurb about this in the previous GS-Xtra. Any thoughts/opinions welcome. TIA
The mandrel bent ones do fit very very good so you might keep that in mind. And of course there's the fact that your car deserves only the best . You will not be able to tell the difference from the drivers seat, but it my show up a little at the track. Just my $.02 Good luck
Thanks Shayne. I was wondering when the exhaust is past the X-pipe and the mufflers if the mandrel bends would make that much of a difference. The reason I'm asking is Torque Tech wants $190 for the pair :eek2: I just checked with Summit Racing and Flowmaster 2.5 mandrel bent tailpipes are $99 (part # FLO-15802) :bglasses:
Wow that's a big difference in price!! I wonder how the Flowmaster pipes fit. I've installed Torque Tech's stuff before and was pretty happy. I've got TA's pipes on both my cars right now. I like TA's tailpipe because of the angle cut that he puts on the ends. I know at one time he only sold the whole systems but you'd have to call them and see if he could give you a price on some tailpipes. You're best bet if you're having Rob C. do the install is to let him get the parts. He'll get a better deal and some of that will be passed on to you in either the part or the labor. A lot of times if you let a guy make a buck on the a part that would have cost you the same anyway, he'll help you out with labor. Let me know how it turns out because I'll be doing something similar to my wifes car. P.S. Just got my window sticker from John Trommetter. What an awsome job. He even sent it to me before he got my check so I would have it for Norwalk. Total amount = $4908.57:Brow:
You can get them from Summit, $99., delivered. I'll find the link and repost. FLO-15802 http://store.summitracing.com/defau...keyword&searchtype=both&part=flowmaster+pipes I used these on my car and they fit perfect. No problems or rebending/banging on at all. Good luck. Phil
Gotta say Marco that these pipes are just barely visible (but certainly noticeable) from the side of the car just under and behind the wheel well. And they really look good without the crimps. Ditto on the nice clean turn-down that TA puts on the end. It's a good looking exhaust system. P.S. Gotta use aluminized pipes too!!
Phil, Are you going to Norwalk? I'd like to check out you pipes. The ones on your car that is :eek2: .
I have no empircal information to back this, but it is my belief that mandrel-bent are only marginally better than "crimp-bent" (my term). Picture fluid flowing through a tube. Or even better, picture one of those water slides that you went on as a kid. The fluid tends to hug the outside of the bend- that is where the most volume and velocity are. Therefore if you make the inside a bit rougher (with the indentations), I don't think you're going to muck up the exhaust flow all that bad, if at all. Given the chance to have either one I would go for Mandrel bent, but for that kind of price difference I would think the muffler shop version will work just fine. Maybe someone with some dyno #'s will chime in and give some better information. -Bob C.
I have the flowmaster 15802's on my car, the only thing that has to be done is the turn down at the end, they fit and look nice, you can't beat the price, most shops will charge you that much to crimp bent a set for ya.
Those pipes SUCK! Look at them they go out to the side like a GN !!:eek2: That wont even look like it should.... Look here No wonder they are cheap!! they dont finish the bends to fit the car.............
Mike, Those pipes exit right next to the frame rail at the rear bumper mount, the only thing that needs to be done to them is to put the detail bend on at the tip or if you like to turn them a bit out board to the corners. I've got them on my car.
Ok I see. Well heres the deal the ones that I have from TT were slashed at the tip so to be level with the bumper and are pointing straight down just like the factory did. uzzled: IMO those that point straight out the back remind me of the chevy farm trucks around here!!:spank:
My pipes are tucked right up in there. I do remember now that I may have had the ends turned down and angle cut down. Come see at Norwalk if you like. Phil
Yeah, if you leave them the way they are shipped they shoot straight out the back, but for $20 the shop said they'd detail them any way I wanted, I've just got them turned down a bit now until the bumper goes on then I'll take it back down to them to have it made perfect, they said they would do it for free. The TA and TT tailpipes did have all the right bends but at an additional $80 plus more expensive shipping it ended up saving me enough to buy some air bags for my rear springs at the same time I got my tailpipesand the wife was none the smarter:Brow: .
Hey Marco, I have the flow master tail pipes on my GS, and they fit really good for the money. I would go that route again in the future.
Hmmmmmm, air bags. Never thought about those before. My car doesn't experience any wheel hop now. Would they help me much more?
"Hmmmmmm, air bags. Never thought about those before. My car doesn't experience any wheel hop now. Would they help me much more?" Well I figured they couldn't hurt, and heck if I can slip them in under the radar why not. Also like the option of loading the car with people or stuff in the trunk and not experiencing the saggy butt look, there's enough of that too be seen around here already:laugh:. It also allows you to make up for one spring sagging at a slightly higher rate than the other.
So, what kind of modifications do I need to do (or Rob needs to do or get done to them :Brow: ) to these pipes to make them fit correctly? How do they fit on their own? I've already ordered these from Summit, along with the 17749 Walker mufflers and a down pipe from Torque Tech. Now I only need to decide on an X-pipe. If Nick F makes a 2.5 inch, I'll get his, otherwise it's Dr. Gas.
