Did you decide on pistons yet and cam? Machine shop should measure deck height. Probably find it around .025 taller then spec which can bump compression up .

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

I would find another shop that knows Buicks and bring your engine there. I mean would you go to a proctologist for dental work?

I was getting around .050 deck on mine.

Mine measured .023 on one side pass side was.028 . squared off with Scott brown pistons that should have .005 out of hole with .050 stainless ring head gaskets.

Still thought he was "on the fence". Good that the right decision was made.

Hadnt found any yet through that other shop but turbo Buick shop said that has good deal going with diamond manufacturer so once I get block to him will see what he recommends I sort of threw out what other shop was saying about anything, cam is ta-284 model with stage 1 valve springs and lifters and rods and double roller timing set..

I went thru competition components. (Scott Brown) for my pistons.so check with racetec. buyracingparts.com the will change piston as needed for compression or other needs. And I'm getting custom headgaskets thru competition components also that are.050 thick and large bore for my engine. They should be reusable.
I think the 284 will work well with 10.2 compression.

I checked that site I didn't see any pistons for scott brown am I missing something.. I tried to search it

So guy at turbo buick gives me a quote of 4500 bucks to do head porting, oil mod to take care of oiling issue, bore, and total reassembly of block...I am supplying everything besides pistons and rings and whatever is needed for heads valves etc which he will get hes leaning towards 9.5 hyper pistons if I won't be using nos at any point which I shouldn't be ...but 4500 :Do No: Is that about right I know buicks were expensive to rebuild but this was not what I was prepared for...

Porting/ valve job can be time consuming that could easily blow 1000-1500. What kind of specs he say on the head port? Is that studs in mains?new timing cover? No its not a bad price . abit of a premium. Any break in or dyno?. You can bet he will use parts he trusts to hold up.. Don't be afraid to ask some questions. If he is replacing valve get TA larger stage 1 350 valves. Or maybe he has included that. More than likely that's valve seats in there too but I have never had seats done on any of mine. So go in and have him explain. Not that I think he is doing anything wrong but you want to know what your paying for. Trishield is Alittle more but does use forged pistons and dyno tunes . so its not a bad price.

/\/\/\/\ This./\/\/\ Explain to him that you are new at this and ask for an itemized estimate, not because you don't trust him, just for your own knowledge. Or, take someone along with you who has been there, done that. Better yet, both.
Even after you develop a working relationship with a shop, you still need to work with them on what will be done and what the cost will be. Finishline did my engine and I just filled a wheelbarrow with cash and left it in the shop. Just kidding. Geoff and Bobb knew what I wanted and built accordingly.

I did about the same with the 430 and spent around 10K when it was all said and done. FIW, Im very happy with my build.

Time to kick around options. If I can't afford to get it done this route would I be able to swap in set of these 9.75 to 1 pistons standard bore with rings and do cam swap using my ta 284 with stage 1 springs and lifters and put it back together without having an issue with oiling etc.. like I said just another option

Its just a few hundred bucks more to get the good pistons and then you have a lighter, better bottom end....

If you are going "budget" anywhere, don't do it on the shortblock. The bolt-ons you can swap out later for better stuff, but I'd make sure the 'foundation' was a solid as possible.
