I have never restored a car before and I ran into something I thought was a little strainge today. The guy I am, or maybe was having do the machining and rebuild on my motor told me today when I asked him for an estimate on the short block that he doesnt give estimates.when he does high performance engines the cost is the cost.
He seems to be a nice guy and he did a great job on my heads but do I just let him go with the motor and pay when hes done? is this normal ?
he is not a buick guy but with the info from this board ive been able to direct him.
    thanks Al

he's not giving me the warm fuzzies

The usual senario is that the machinist checks out the block, pistons etc and takes micrometer measurements of everything. The last guy I dealt with charged me 75.00 to inspect what I brought him. After that he can give you a cost on the rebuild. All the standard machining operations have a set price. He should be able to give you a pretty accurate price before any work is done. What happens if he rebuilds your engine and gives you a price that is unreasonable to you? Know what your getting and get a price beforehand. If he is unable, get another machinist.

i agree with 64203 100%! i have had several motors done, all by the same shop and always had a estimate before any work was started.if the shop ran into something unexpected they always called to let me know and get my OK for any additional work or parts.
