I have an M20 tranny out of my 1970 GS that needs at least the seals replaced. How hard is it to rebuild a manual? Is this something best left to a professional? I have rebuilt several 350 and 400 transmissions, but never a manual. Thanks for any help, Kraig
Hi Kraig. If you have been doing automatics, a manual should be "a piece of cake". Just get a manual so that you have the torque settings & the details of the syncro units. No problems, & good luck. Per. :beer :beer
Kraig, There is nothing complex inside a Muncie. You will need a press to both take it apart and put it back together. If you are replacing the cluster gear it can be tricky due to the large number of loose roller bearings which need to be installed. Are you sure it's an M20? Most GS's came with M21's. Brian
I am putting my M-20 together right now and I say do it yourself, just do as Per said have a good manual and they are very simple to do especially compared to an auto trans.
I have done a couple of these , when you are sliding the shafts thru the casew the bearings like to fall out . An old and wise man toild me to use good grease when installing the needle bearings and spacers, then freeze it for a few hours . Then when your ready to install the shafts warm them up . This keeps the bearings ion place with the cold grease and the warm shaft slides thru like a hot knife thru butter . No charge for this one as it was free to me . Have the shifetr rebuilt before installing it in the trans . Mr Gasket has a rebuild service or at least they did . Goos luck JK
