Looking for a ring and pinion of 3.23 or 3.42 for a 9 3/8 Rear End b body car. Any help would be appreciated.
hehe....what year Riv are you looking to install it in? I'm guessing that since it's a 3.23 or 3.42, it's going in a 71-73?
Good guess. Found a lead in ILL. from a guy that races derby cars. Sadly to say he uses 71 to 76 Buicks, Olds, and Pontiac B body cars. Spoke to him yesterday and he said at one time he had over 50 b body cars and he always has rears. He is checking haveon any 3 series 9 3/8. I will keep everyone posted on my findings. If he has more than one set I will pass it along.
If you can't find a 3 series, the 2 are easier to find. In a driver, the performance difference is negligible.
'71-73 Buick Estate wagon would be 1st place I ck'ed for a '71+ 9 3/8 3.23 gearset. Despite all the Derby idiots, that vintage of rough Estate wagons is still out there, just got to find yard owners that will let you pull gears & axles before they crush. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
Does anyone know if the 9 3/8 ring and pinion from a Buick 65-70 will work in a 71-76 B Body Buick? take a look in the Boat forum. we've got two stickied threads devoted to these rears.
Mark meant "No" as in "No it won't" not as in, "I don't know". It won't fit, you're stuck looking for 71-76 Buick. If you just want to switch out the gears, you can look at chevy gears that were in a Caprice or another large car, but that's it.
Have yet to run across a Buick 9 3/8 in a '71+ Caprice or Kingswood wagon & have been under hundreds of them. The larger r/e used under such Chevys was a '71-76 8 7/8 MP series rear. After the rear cover is pulled, easy to spot by the existance of 12 small headed ring gear bolts. The '71+ 9 3/8 Buick on the other hand, will use 3/4" head ring gear bolts. Ck'ing my paperwork, last '71+ 9 3/8 3.23 gearsets I pulled were out of '72 Estate wagons. '73 & 74 Stage1 Rivs will also often have that ratio, as well, just MUCH harder to find. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
Roger, Would you have any 9 3/8 ring and pinion in a 3.23 lying around in the garage? :bglasses: I hate the idea of buying a parts car just for the rearend. Will
Hi Roger, you're the expert, I was only basing what I said on the way I got mine. Posted on Ebay as a caprice gear set.
No problem Jack, just trying to save guys a lot of time jacking up & looking under the big Chevy wgns & Caprices. Will, currently am out of nice 3.23 ratio '71+ 9 3/8 gears, pulled the last two sets as they were needed. Will be pulling more this Spring. Got Posi? :3gears: Roger
just trying to save guys a lot of time jacking up & looking under the big Chevy wgns & Caprices. hell, jack the Chevy wagon up and STEAL THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY. the 8 7/8" will bolt right up. probably a lot easier to find than a 9 3/8" posi diff.
I have a 3.23 rearaxle, posi diff and set of gears that I am going to sell. They will probably end up on e/bay as 2 seperate items. I removed them from my 73 riv STG1, I was lucky enough to find a 3.43 setup FROM A 71 gs riv to put under mine. I also have a set of super RARE 3.91 gears for a 9 and 3/8th setup BUT THEY ARE FROM AN EARLIER SETUP. I BELEIVE 69. THEY WILL BE LISTED AS WELL. THANKS ED
I also have a set of super RARE 3.91 gears for a 9 and 3/8th setup BUT THEY ARE FROM AN EARLIER SETUP. I BELEIVE 69. wow. musta been out of a factory drag car.
