Fired up the regal today for the first time since rebuild. Had some issues arise and am seeking advice from you guys

    Basic overview:
    .030 over JE flat tops
    TA 290-08HL cam & kit
    TA AL stage 1 heads
    KB roller rockers
new std oil pump kit & booster plate
MSD billet distribuor with 6AL box and retard unit to pull 20* timing at start up
Distributor in @ 20* BTD, mechanical advance limited to 14*, no vacuum can
Carb shop stage 3 quardrajet built in 2003 for this engine
    hitachi mini starter

Make a long story short, prelubed while barring over, installed dist. at 20* BTDC #1 . Fired engine up, brought up to 2500 RPMs for break in. See gasoline vapor pushing up from front of carb top plate in the vicinity of primary and around pump shaft. Shut the car down. Of course I am by myself with no one to work the switch and throttle pedal. Mop up the gas. Get wife to start car while I am at the engine. Engine starts, kicks back and breaks the armature retaining bolts off at the starter nose.

Nice, real nice day. No spare starter of course. Out of business for today. :ball:

The questions I have is it possible my carb has seal/gasket issues for setting for over two years? The carb has never been run prior to today. What do you folks recommend for a stout starter? Will a factory type starter fit with MT headers? Will the factory unit handle 12-1 static compression?

Appreciate any and all advuce on the carb and starter subjects.

    PS
While it was running it was quite stout sounding. Scared the crap out of my dog, 2 cats, daughters and had several neighbors walking over to see what the noise was about. :pp

Sounds like the float is set way to high, or is stuck in the up position.

Ditto!! If its a Q-jet I think the float is supposed to set at 9/32".
