I'm looking for an 8.5" project rearend to build for my 1970 Skylark. I basically want a good solid housing that will bolt right into my car without modification. Everything else is trivial because I plan to build it will new parts anyway.

If you've got what I might be looking for, let me know.

    Thanks!

10 bolt 8.5 rear in your car with an original 1970 10 bolt 8.2 will require a shorter drive shaft SO they is no such bolt in with absolutely NO MODS. You have to do at least that.

It will be the same width all mounting points etc. Look under 1971 1972 buick skylark and or cutlass vehicles. I am sure they have been popped into other A-body GM cars but you need to be able to ID so you do not buy a 8.2 you think is a 8.5.

I've got an 8.5 out of a 72 SportWagon you can have for free, 2.73 open, needs axles and brake plates and you have to come to NC to get it but if you show up I'll even help load it in your truck!

Jim- I figured as much on the drive shaft length, but hadn't confirmed it anywhere so thanks for that. I'm due for one of those soon anyway...especially when I have a stronger rear.

Kurt- If I knew someone with a 4 cylinder truck I'd be there this weekend! Problem is my brother has an 05 Sierra with the 8.1 liter  so by the time I drive that hog down there I could buy myself a new Strange Dana 60. But who knows...if I can't find one that's gonna cost less than gas, I might try to figure something out. Thanks for the offer!

Thanks Jim. I did post there also and I've got a deal pending on a rear that I'll hopefully be able to pick up this weekend. From the reading and searches I've done, it sounds like you're the guy to ask for advice when it comes time to build this thing. I'd like to do a Detroit Trutrac and 30 spline axles. From what I understand the only thing that will need to be different is the axle bearings. I don't see any obvious axles though. Moser sells C clip axles, but I understand that the 8.5 will have bolt in axles correct? Do I need to order custom axles from them? Is this something I can get from your company when I'm ready?

    Thanks for the help.

No sweat Charlie, it's here if you want it as I can't seem to get rid of it and won't scrap it

When I built my 8.5, Jim gave me a Moser invoice # to reference when I called them to order. Jim orders them all the time. All I did was tell them the invoice # and say, "Give me a set of these"

I believe driveshaft length for an 8.5" is ~54" to a th350. I went through hell to get a driveshaft for my car. All the junkyards had 70's chevelles and all my friends (psh, Chevy guys:Do No:) said a driveshaft from a 70 chevelle would be a direct bolt in. We didn't realize that in 1970 Chevelles had the 8.2 which uses a longer driveshaft.:Dou:

I may have an available open rear if I get this posi put in my car. Generous offer by Kurt but NC is quite a haul! As long as I can get this other rear in my car you can have my open rear for free, all I need off of it is the brakes. I should have my new rear in by January.
