Long Distance with Headers?

I'm coming back to USA tomorrow for a well deserved home leave. Am planning to drive my 87GN from Chicago to Jackson MS packed full of stuff for the vacation place.

On the other hand, I'd prefer to drive the 72GS462 with the 2004R down there instead but am concerned. Mainly about the heat of the headers.

What's your advice here, can you run a fresh big block 12s car (albeit with an OD) for the ten or twelve hours to get there? I reckon the headers will be red hot, not sure if this sort of a trip is something okay, unwise, or just plain reckless with a car like that.

    Appreciate your advice.

I've driven my not-quite 12 second GS to Bowling Green (650 miles one way) with headers and didn't cook anything, although I did learn that plastic oil pressure line is not a good thing!

Greg Schmelzer What are you looking at?!

    No problems!!!

MIke, you should have no problems with it. Drove my old 68 Polara with a very healthy 383 from Florida to Nebraska with a loaded utility trailer (engine blocks, trannys, household stuff, etc) to Nebraska in 1 1/2 days. Unloaded the trailer, cruised it to Mopar Nats in Columbus, Back to Nokomis, IL back to Florida with an empty trailer, loaded the trailer and headed back to Ne loaded with more engines and such. All in a one week period. No overdrive either, although it did have a 2.30 series rear end. Got nearly 15 - 16 mpg loaded. After that, took it to Denver for a school for 2 months and then headed back to Florida with it. The only problem I had the whole trip was the POS B&M Holeshot convertor with the pump snout of center and they wouldn't warranty it because we had installed it!!

You should have no problems with your car.

I have driven to the Nats in Bowling Green a bunch of times (no trailer). Headers are actually better for street driving. I have daily-driven my 455 for years with headers, including long trips.

If you think you are running lean, your headers will run too hot. If your timing is several degrees off, your headers could be too hot. But if everything is tuned up well, you are fine.
