Any input on flat tappet hydraulic lifters, Crower, Comp Pro Magnums, TA etc the ones in my pops need replacing and I think they were GM lifters sold thru the GSCA, things rattle like crazy
They've always been noisy , and oil psi is the best of any BBB I've ever had , I feel sure it's still healthy just annoying ha.
I bought a gsca cam/lifters 5 years ago here on the board. The lifters ended up being the crane Hi intensity bleed down ones. Part 99384-2. I've not used them because my freind uses them in a mopar and the really tick at idle. I've had good luck with the magnums. Ray
I think I've tried every brand of lifter years ago, the GM ones were the quietest, the Comp Pro Magnum (I think that's the name) were good too.
I been trying to get my pop to go with a 308s for several years, I hope this latest repair will allow me to do so
This is a slippery slope in a lot of situations. Once you deviate from a stock lobe, you'll get some amount of noise from the valve train and some lifters will make it add to it. For 5-6 years I had terrible lifter tick, hot or cold start they sounded terrible. I finally tried Johnson Hy-Lift and the noise is much, much improved. It's not perfect but much better. The lifters I removed were supposed to be GM Deplhi that I bought from a Buick vendor, I have no idea if they truly were or not. The Johnson Hy-Lift are advertised as "no tick". You can buy direct from them also, they are in Muskegon Michigan. I paid $110 for 2 sets incl shipping. They will discount the lifters for large orders.
No reason not to. Once you start going with performance cams you might as well go to a solid lifter cam. I will bet my solid lifter cam is less clicky than many hydro cams. Just that sewing machine sound. I did do the EDM (hole in the lifter face) lifters for better oiling.
Hi Rob, Do you have the part number for the "Hy-Lift" lifters. I need a set of lifters as soon as possible. Just collapsed a lifter today at Milan, and need to get new ones in by Wednesday. We are taking my car to Indy this week for the Division 3 finals, my son is running my Buick (Skylark 455) in the Sportsman class. Thanks.
One of the reasons I like the Pro Magnums is that even with old valve springs 400+ runs it will still spin up to 6500. Couldn't do that for as long with other lifters... I have TA 608B Stage 2 hydraulic.....
Are you referring to Johnson Hy-Lift or Johnson? For those who don't know, both companies are in Michigan but different. Hy-lift was bought to TopLine and sells stock type lifters (among other engine parts) and the other Johnson sells what I think used to be the Scorpion Carbide Faced lifter, these are considerably more than stock type lifters ($60 vs. ~$400).
Yep, ordered CCA-865-16 this morning as they were my only option to have them overnighted, will definitely try the Johnson's at some point tho
