    Legendary Interiors

Some were commenting/wondering on how long the wait might be to order a new interior from Legendary. Just thought I'd relay that I placed my order for all new seat covers, door panels, etc. just before their New Year's sale was originally scheduled to end, so I ordered I think on December 30 or 31. They said they had all the parts in stock (parchment white) except the door panels, which they had to manufacture, and the wait would be 4 weeks max. I received an email yesterday from Kathryn in Customer Service at Legendary saying they are just now shipping the entire order. So, it took just over 5 weeks. In my books, that's pretty good! I hear the fit and quality of Legendary products is excellent, so will report back after they're installed (ie, after the snow melts and I can get the car to an upholstery shop). :TU: :)

    Ian,
I ordered a saddle carpet and headliner(71 color and not correct for my 70 Skylark) and it took 5 1/2 weeks to 6 weeks. I knew up front that there would be a possible 6 week wait so I did it while the winter months were in my favor. As for the quality.....Well lets just say I am impressed at how nice the products really are. This is truly a great place to do business with. The sales staff went way out of their way to 2 day a sample of carpet and headliner so the ball could get rolling sooner. I will buy from them in a heartbeat and know I will be totally satisfied.

I've been dealing with them for 20 yrs. Since they first started doing 60's interiors. I can honestly say that I have always been completely satisfied.
They have even recovered pieces that were damaged during reassembly due to my error. I just payed the shipping.
Now that's customer service! :TU: :TU:

    Packages arrived today

Just for the record. Three boxes from Legendary arrived today by UPS. Someone in an earlier post mentioned sticker shock from the customs & brokerage fees (I think Steve Craig?) and boy was that a fact! Amount due on receipt for UPS brokerage and handling is $283.00!!!!! Just another reason to have parts shipped by USPS whenever possible! (Certainly not Legendary's fault). Now all I need is spring so I can get these parts installed!

Yeah, it really hurts! Small packages come though the regular mail just great, it's the couriered parcels that kill ya.

    Ian,
Find someone stateside and have them handle shipping. Or have the parts shipped to someone in Maine and drive there to pick them up. For almost $300 you can drive to NY and back.

Sticker shock??? Yup, that's me. Not anymore. I'm resigned to the fact that most new or good used parts must come from the South or Southwest. Don't even flinch anymore.
" How much do I owe you?" Pay the man & go forward.
BTW: I ordered bucket seat covers for my '71 in Sandalwood, from Y-1. I believe they buy from Legendary. Non-stock colour, wasn't even available as new. 13 weeks delivery but what a nice product they made. Makes my interior a 1 of none ever made!

I live 45 minutes away from Legendary and have found their products to be excellent! Y1 does buy from Legendary, so just skip the middleman and deal directly with the source.

    ian:
there is no duty on autoparts. u have to pay the cdn federal tax + provincial tax.
companies like ups, fedex, lay on the brokerage fees. i think that ups is the worst.
fortunately i live in windsor and have parts shipped to detroit, where either i pick them up or a relative brings them to windsor.

Gerry, you are correct, I did not pay any duty - just $283 worth of brokerage and handling fees, plus of course the governemnt's unfair take in the form of taxes.

    Installing Seat Upholstery from Legendary

I am trying to install front seat upholstery on my 69 GS with a bench seat. I wanted to change my padding at the same time to try and eliminate that musty odor you sometimes get in a convertible. Unfortunatley this is not going so well.

I bought new cotton padding from a supplier. AAA grade cotton. Then I took off my original seat back cover fro the passengers side. I noticed the original padding was two layers of different color material, so right away I think I have a problem. Perhaps one is denser than the other? Anyway, I measured the thickness of the original and found I would have to double up the new cotton to get approximately the same thickness. The guys at Legendary said to put a modified black plastic trash bag over the seat which would help the upholstery slip on easier, but I never could get the cover on. It was so tight, I finally removed it as it looked like it was going to tear in the inside seam.

Has anyone had experience doing this with the seat upholstery from Legendary Interiors? Are there any tips you could share? Does anyone know how this was done at the factory?

Sheesh, I wish I never started this project!!!

    I won't even try!

    John,

I was afraid I'd run into that and many more problems, so I have all my new Legendary parts boxed up and ready to take to a local auto upholstery shop. I found a guy who specializes in older cars through the insurance appraiser I had insure my car. So, off it goes - don't need the headaches of fiddling with over a thousand dollars worth of covers and trim bits. Once upon a time I would have tried almost anything myself, but I am getting to the point in my life where I understand that the "Experts" can just do it easier, correctly, and in a fraction of the time!!

Here is a thread I have on my 64 buckets with Legendary covers and a so called expert installing them. I am waiting to hear back from Legendary but I am sure I will send them to Legendary because this is not acceptable as thery are now.

    I saw that thread

Hey there Ed. I saw your other thread previously. That is a heck of a mess.

My 69 GS seat is different because the back is all sewed and it is supposed to slip over the frame from the top, so I don't have those side seams like your seat.

I had already disassembled my seat backs from the seat bottom, and then I started to replace the bottom upholstery. But it looked like I needed new padding as I saw what appeared to be dark spots in the cotton and I know my car smelled of mold pretty badly. So I didn't want to take the cover off till I got some cotton. Then I took the seat to a place and they quoted me $350 to install the new upholstery over the old padding.
I thought that was a bit much so I called another who ball-parked a price at $300 with new cotton. The second place told me where to get the cotton locally.

So I got some cotton and thought I'd try one of the seat backs. I discovered the orifinal padding is double layered, and of different colors. It looks like the back layer may be more dense. Also the original pading is sandwiched in a burlap bag back and a linnen netting front. I was able to save this and replaced the cotton with a double layer tof the triple A cotton batting I bought. It seemed acceptable but when I was slipping the upholstery over the frame, it was so tight, I just couldn't get it all the way on. So I was just looking for some tips from someone who has done this before and in advance of spending $300 on having someone else do it.

I Know the place that did my seats have a steam wand that they use to assit them with the tight seat covers. Legendary has been great so far with the door panels that had the wrong color accent stripe. They issued a call tag and sent the correct ones in a few weeks. They also fixed the boot that had a wrinkle sewn in it and the padding peeling away from the glue. I hope they take care on this. If I had to do it over again I would have just sent the seats to them in the first place. :Dou:
