Dang. I was just under the 81 the other day, and it was the first time I had been under it since before I bought it. Now I don't remember dad doing any work on it, so he must have drove it like this for a while. The exhaust system on it is composed of:
exhaust manifolds from a 79 Caprice
just enough pipes to get a couple inches from the motor
    mufflers
I that order and nothing more. The truck isn't noisy or anything, so you cant notice it. the end of the pipes don't even make it to the back of the cab. do I need more pipes, or is it legal like it is?

legal as it is. i believe anything over 15 years of age doesn't have to have the original exhaust on it. at least here in michigan... however it may be different elsewhere.

my dad's '88 fullsize, extended cab, 1 ton 454 powered chevy truck only has manifolds, mufflers and piping to connect the two. no longer needs the cat. or anything special due to it's age.

I know it doesn't have all orig exhaust. The 305 came out of a 1979 Caprice. It came with a 4.1
