If I were to replace the orig style bulbs in the taillights with led bulbs, would I need to purchase the electronic signal stats for flashers & signal lights?
Gerry go to Sparky's Corner Forum. There are two pinned threads on LED conversion. The short answer is maybe. If you swap all the bulbs I would say yes. However, I left my front turn signals incandescent and that seems to be enough load to keep my mechanical flashers working. I think my flashers were replaced so maybe they are less sensitive to the load required than the factory originals?. You can always try it out. Swap the bulbs and see if they work ok. If not, reinstall an old bulb or two to create enough load for the flashers to keep working and then order new flashers. You are correct, if you have to swap them, you wil need to do both turn signal and emergency flashers. The LED conversion is worth it, the differences amazing. Be sure to order red colored bulbs for the tail lights. The white leds are so bright that they will washout the red lenses.
If they are thermal flashers, you will have to swap them. If they are electronic flashers, you might get by without it. One of my cars wouldn't work without a new flasher and the other worked due to having a non-thermal flasher. There's a whole thread on this in Sparky's Corner where I and several others went through some LED conversions. There's another one on LED headlight conversions. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/led-changeover-1970-to-1972-skylark-gs.329221/
No Leo. I will probably just replace the taillight bulbs & flashers. Would like to have brighter rear lights. Have to wait until the border opens so I can order parts. Not going resto mod. Too costly & the car is #s match. Want to keep it mostly stock.
I had to take the LEDs out of my 57 Dodge after I put in the Dakota Digital Cruise Control. They didn’t draw enough to disengage the cruise when tapping the break.
