I've been watching this thread closely, as I need to decide about speaker placement in my convertible. I'll be upgrading my dash speaker to either two small 4" or go with the new dual channel 6"x9" that's available, I'm also going to get the CAS kick panels, I've seen them in a few cars now and they are quality pieces. What I'm considering now is the stock 6"x9" mounting on the rear seat back tower, it has positions for two 6"x9"s but they are facing back and will be fighting the well liner with the top up and the entire top when down. Should I only focus on bass from these locations or can I get some quality sound? There's actually plenty of room for 4ea. 6"x9"s back there, and I planned on installing an amp in that area also.

You won't have any room for a 6x9 in your Dash, and you don't want to use a "Dual Channel", if you can help it!:bglasses:
You will want to use the "2" 4" speakers for your Dash speakers, because:
    1) They use the same "original" speaker space
    2) You will then have STEREO (LEFT and RIGHT speakers, compared to ONE speaker) SOUND coming from your DASH!:bglasses:
I use a pair of "4 Channel" 6x9's in the back deck (Hardtop, not sure about Convertible, YET, I'm still working on it) to "balance" the sound.

Let me explain this way, so you might understand:

My system in my '70 Skylark (Hardtop) uses 2 - 4" speakers in the Dash, for Midrange and High (Tweet) Range.

I then have my 2 -6x9's in the Rear Deck (these are "4 Channel", which have a Woofer, for Bass, a Midrange, AND "2" Tweeters for the High Range), to BALANCE the FRONT to the REAR,

AND I have a 10" Subwoofer in a box, in the trunk, to ADD BASS to (and COMPLETE) the WHOLE SYSTEM!

So, I have the HIGH's in the FRONT!
I have the HIGHS, the MIDRANGES, AND the LOWS from the 6x9's, from the Rear Deck!
I have the Sub in a box, for BASS ONLY, in the trunk!:bglasses:
    IT ROCKS! LOUD AND CLEAR!:TU:

    Scott,
Thanks for the reply, the dual channel front speaker I was refering to actually has right and left inputs into a single speaker, common woofer and two tweeters, not a standard coaxial design, still not sure whether they're worth a crap or not, probably will go with the two 4" set up as they are plentiful and cheap.
Convertibles are a bit trickier in the back as you have no exposed deck. The stock location directs the speaker reward toward the trunk and its under the well liner so it will definately be muffled, and much worse with the top down, I guess I'll have to experiment some with it, theres more than enough room for speakers back there just not sure I'll get much from them. No doubt an amp would help punch it through:Brow: .
I've got a way's to go before I have to get any components but I want to get the mounting spots and wiring done ahead of time.

    SINGLE

    Len,
The TWO dash speakers will make a NOTICEABLE difference, over ANY "SINGLE" dash speaker!:bglasses:
If no one sits in the back seat of your Convertible (no one is ALLOWED in the back seats of ANY of MY Buicks, because they are SPORTS CARS, in my opinion, and when was the last time you saw someone in the back seat of a CORVETTE? :Brow:  :blast: ), then I use a pair of 6x9 speaker boxes that sit on the seat, facing FORWARD, that way you can have "temporary" QUALITY sound. I doubt you will ever find a "permanent" solution for the Convertible, but you can have a "DECENT" system without having to spend a lot of money, or having to hack up the car, just to find a good location for speakers!:Smarty:

The key is that you want your speakers to FACE the position of where the "listener" is sitting in the vehicle, for the best sound. So, if the speakers face INTO the TRUNK, then you might as well not install them, because you won't be able to HEAR them (very well)."Do No"

With as many "speaker boxes" that are available, I would recommend that you put one in the trunk, and face it forward towards the passenger compartment. In the Convertible, since the power top pump is right behind the seat, you won't be able to place the speaker box there, as it is a PERFECT location in a Hardtop! I put the speaker box right behind the seat, on the "raised" area of the trunk, still allows full use of storage area in trunk.:TU:
Also I have enough slack in the wiring, that I can take the speaker box out of the trunk, and set it on the ground (or on the trunk lid, with the lid closed, and the wires coming out), when I'm at a park or show, so that I can be outside the vehicle, and still be able to hear my stereo! My radio is wireless remote control, too, so I can change radio stations, or CD songs, while NEVER MISSING catching a Frisbee, at the same time!:bglasses:
I have it set up that the rearview mirror reflects the back window, that reflects the radio in the dash. As long as I can see the "reflection" of the radio in the rearview mirror, All I do is aim the remote at the rearview mirror, and I have full control of my stereo from OUTSIDE the car, too!:bglasses: :TU:

Just some ideas for some of you guys to have fun with. Like I said, there's SO MUCH AVAILABLE when it comes to stereo stuff, you can pretty much get what you want for whatever you want! Have fun with it!:bglasses: I'm interested in what types of systems you have. Maybe we should start posting pictures of "stereo systems", to see how they look! We have pictures of everything else, but no "custom stereos" (YET).:Brow:  :TU: :bglasses:

    Re: Re: radio

Is that just a CD player or is it a headunit with AM-FM and CD? If it is AM-FM w/CD what is model #. I was gonna go with Alpine and buy another plate to adapt to headunit and use Alpine speakers for front dash and rear to replace AM radio in car.

    TIA :)

    Hi Jim (68 Skylark):bglasses: ,

Actually, the indash that I have is an AM/FM/CD player, with a removeable Face (for Anti Theft), and it is also has a remote control (optional, but I REALLY like it! I can turn the radio on and off, and control stations and volume from OUTSIDE of the car!:bglasses: ). The model number that I use is a KDC-3011 (now discontinued, but just about ANY newer style radio will work:bglasses::TU: )!

The Alpine system will work, too. Name brands are just personal preference. I don't like to "overspend", if I don't have to, so I buy Kenwood stuff, usually at local shops on clearance prices!
    :Brow: :Smarty: :bglasses:

I did finally buy a digital camera, though, so I'll have some pics in a couple of days, as I transfer them here.:bglasses: :TU:

    Hey Lee:bglasses: ,

Marco was good enough to post the original thread I made with the picture of the dash speaker conversion that I did. You ask HOW I mounted the dash speaker? I used the ORIGINAL speaker, so it mounts the exact same way as I took it out of the dash (just one 10mm nut holding it on to the dash:TU: ).
Check out the thread for more pictures, and details.:bglasses: :TU:
If you have any more questions, please ask!
You also asked me what kind of speakers that I used, any 4" door speakers will work fine. I used the Kenwood 1066's, and they sound good for the system that I have! A lot of guys don't want to take the time to install the Dash speaker in their car, because it might take away from "originality", or they just don't WANT to do it.:Do No: They don't know what they're MISSING!
The dash speaker really makes "that much" of a difference. It doesn't have to be "Loud", but "Clear" is a good thing. I like BOTH!:TU: :bglasses:
