Muscle and finesse. Take the front seats out for room.

You call pull the entire assembly and disconnect the cables at the flappers to yank the assembly as one piece. The panel itself is connected in the vent void with some type of soft caulk for sealing and a bunch of small hexhead machine screws accessed by pulling the vent grill - slip a screwdriver behind that grill to work it out carefully. Then you can get the screws. You can't get the cables out from the panel because they are clipped in place from behind. Once you have the panels out of the car - no problem removing the clips and cables.

Driver side more difficult than passenger; MUST remove the parking brake pedal assembly from the firewall. No fun on this side!

Do a nice job cleaning and refinishing these pieces - you don't want to do this job twice. Get new carpet pieces from Legendary - takes a few weeks for these to show up - you can glue the carpet pieces on after reassembly into the car. Carpet originally was stapled on.

    Very best of luck!

    HTH.

Don't know if this is acceptable resurrecting an old threat, but I have one more question on this topic.
What did you use (or did you) to replace the putty that is in between the frame and vent. I'm assuming that you removed the original stuff.

    Thanks

Sorry if I was not suppose to bring this thread back to life.

I have a broken vent cable on the driver side. Funny how I said you don't want to do this job twice. Now I'm seven and half years older. :Dou:
