Just wanted to drop in and say hi to everybody. I am new to the buick scene but have always been a lover of big engines in big cars. I am just started a rebuild of a buick 350 rocket engine( at least that what I think it is). It was given to me by my uncle. I have every component of the engine except the camshaft. Im hoping to have the engine completed by mid summer but I know right now Im going to be looking for help as this is my very first rebuild of an engine. I dont even know where to start so Im just gonna take the heads, dome, carb, basepan off and clean it up from there. Any ideas that you guys and gals might have for me or words of initial advice I would be happy to hear them Wilderr Newfoundland Canada
Does the motor have the distributor in the front or back? People mix the "rocket" and the "wildcat" up all the time. Welcome to the board!:beer
I'm with Adam, i've heard that often oh so you have a rocket in that buick. :Smarty: it maybe a buick engine. Nate
Welcome Wilderr, Maybe you should post some photos of that engine, or even better, look for engine codes?
From what I can tell as the engine is in parts is that it stats one the side 350. What specific codes and possible locations could I look for these codes. Also I have a rochester carb and need to find repair manuals or details on that as well. This engine is very dirty right now and needs to be steamed to be worked and get proper id from. I recieved it in quite a state. Good to hear that I will get help and maybe somebody here will like oldsmobile engines ehehhe One big problem i have is that Im in Newfoundland Canada and getting parts. Most of my ordering and research for this project will be online Wilderr
Ok still cleaning and stripping that 350 engine. Have determined that the distributor does in fact go in the front. I also found out that I need valve covers and a new bs cover as well. In cleaning I noticed that these were not in great shape. Will be getting the numbers off the block hopefully soon.
Hello Wilderr First you have to make sure what that engine is: Front distributor mounted at an angle = Buick engine. Front distributor mounted straight up and down = Caddy engine. Back distributor, intake separated from valley cover = Pontiac (or 49-64 Olds). Back distributor, passes through the intake manifold = Chevy. Back distributor, does not pass through the intake manifold = Olds. Buick, Cadillac, Olds and Pontiac transmission bolt patterns are the same, with six bolts. Chevy is different, with five bolts one at the top center. If it's a Buick, use this info to determine the Engine Code: http://www.buicks.net/shop/engine_ident.html
Ok so by the distributor being in the front on a slant that makes it a buick engine. Now where would the numbers be on a buick 350?
Check the engine for the enginecode and post it on this board. You said you're cleaning the engine, so you should have seen the enginecode by now? And you promised to post photos o No: Since we don't know the year of the engine, how do you expect us to tell you what it is? Yor first post was Jan 7th, and still no engine numbers? I'm willing to help you, but first you have to do a little work yourself. It's nothing different from real life mate. So, look for a 2 letter code on the block, or look for the VIN code.
havent had a chance to do much we have been swamped with a heavy snow fall for the past little while plus Im baack in school nighttimes. Will be working at it this weekend though and determined to get that engine code!!!!!!
