I have been into Buick a while. Don't know what took me so long to jion this message board, maybe I've been hanging around the Monte SS board too much. LOL Here are a couple of pics.

First pic is of my friends All original 1970 GS Stage 1 455 convertible with air conditioning, 4 speed, 3.23 posi, consolet. HE purchased it from the original owners (aunt and uncle) It's was profesianlly painted, and installed the optional wheels (stock it had hub caps) and sport mirrors.

Next is a picture of my 86 Regal with a 1970 455 out of an electra 225. I have forged pistons, T/A intake, oiling mods, Edlebrock 850 RPM Q-jet series carb, th200-4r, and a moser 9" with 2.75 gears

Yea, The Regal is a factory Big block car, wink, wink. hahahaha
I broke the original rearend, and a torque converter with that motor. But the th200-4r is stock from an 82 delta 88 and i'v been pounding the tranny for three years, and it's been holding up behind 550lbs/ft, go figure. And the Big Block is so easy to work on, spark plugs are a snap to take out.
That motor I pulled from a 1970 Electra 225 with 100,000 miles, and when I took it apart, there was no wear on it. HAd to rebuild it because I broke the #7 cyl, 2nd piston ring land due to detonation (heavy foot).

I like your friends stage 1 . Does he still have it?

Why did he change out the rear gear?

Yes he still has it, and he lets me drive it too! :)
The rear is origianal to the car, I'm assuming it's a 3.23 gear or so by the rpm it turns goin down the road, I could be wrong.

If original it was a 3.42 since it had AC. 3.23 was a 350 skylark gear. The 3.42 8.2 " is so hard to find parts for that some have gone to 3.23 gears and I just thought there may be a story about his losing his rear gear.

Sorry, no fun story about loosing ring gears in the GS.
    3.42's sounds about right.

But I did bust the spider gears in the 7.5 in the Regal, That was fun! :)

I think the only thing that saved the stock 7.5 rearend in my Regal was I could never get the tires to hook...

When I finally pulled it to swap in the 9" it has now, it made all sorts of "nice" noises when I turned the pinion.
