Just bought a '51 Willys Pickup

Discussion in 'Wet behind the ears??' started by TheCreativeHand, Jan 26, 2008.

  1. Hi, I just bought a 1951 Willys Pickup truck with a buick engine in it. This is my first car that I will be working on and know very little about engines. Can anyone tell me from the photo what vehicle this engine came out of or what size/type it is? Where should I look on it for any identification to be engraved? The air filter on top says Buick 3502. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

man, you don't want that thing :Dou: it's so old and has an old man Buick engine. Sell that to me and find a nice jeep with a SBC.

but seriously, that thing is very cool :TU: you have a Buick 350 and if you get the casting numbers off the intake you can figure out what year engine you have here... http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/smallblock_casting_numbers.html

Once you know the year, you can look for the vin number http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_where.html and that will tell you what it model came out of.

  3. Thanks so much! I will check it out today and see what I can figure out.
If I ever decide to sell, I will keep you in mind.:3gears:

  4. Upon further investigation, I think the engine is a GM

I have found on the engine what appears to be a small GM.
    There is also a 72.
There is a very large 350 on the back of the engine towards the firewall side.

Cast above that are two lines of writing
    A 13
    B-1238643-2

The cover to the air filter says buick 350-2 but the bottom of it has a sticker that says GM use AC air filter A 329CW
    over the letters AA

I can't seem to find any serial numbers stamped on the block but perhaps I am not looking in the right places.

Do you have any more suggesstions as to where to look to see if this is a GM engine and if so, where to find the serial numbers?

  5. Can anyone help me identify this engine?

I thought that perhaps a few photos might help.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to figure out what this engine is and what it came out of?

Looks to be a 1972 Buick 350 Cubic Inch 2 barrel Rochester carb and alot of oil on the intake.

GM is General Motors: Chevy, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, or Cadillac.

the casting number you provided from the intake can be seen on the first link I posted in post #2 and translates to a 72-73 350 2 bbl. The serial number should be on the front of the block on the passenger side bank. IF you get that and post it I'm sure we can figure out what the donor car was. ...and yes it's a GM Buick Motor Division engine.

WOW, no heat!! Must be freezing your ass off in that thing. Is it 4WD? How much you want for it?

  8. Thanks. I looked at the page you sent me and did find this listed

    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 width=300 bgColor=#ffff99 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>1238643</TD><TD>72-73</TD><TD>350 2bbl</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

but then I didn't know that GM and Buick were the same so that threw me off. On the other site you sent me to to find out where the vin number is located, I could only find one place that said 350.

"350 inch until 1971 The engine serial number is stamped on the front of the left cylinder bank. The production code number is between the left exhaust manifold and the two front spark plugs."

I looked all around the engine last night and can't find where the numbers should be stamped. Perhaps they are covered in oil and gunk. Do I need to take anything off to be able to get to where they are stamped? You said they should be on the front of the block on the passenger side, but there is (you must excuse me as I really don't know anything at all about engines yet) there is a gray thing with a belt attached to it that is blocking the view of that part of the block.

Once I know what the engine came out of I plan on buying a manual so that I can learn about all of the parts, what they are called and how they work and hopefully will be able to work on it and get it running smoothly.

You asked if it is 4wd and it is supposed to be but I havn't been able to turn the locks on the hubs yet to see. I think it is turning the front axle when I put it in 4wd. The main shifter has 3 gears, another shifter to the right to put it in and out of 4wd and a third shifter that goes between low neutral and high.

As for the heat, I hope to get that hooked up at some point, but it really isn't that cold in there. I think the engine pushes back into the cab some and there seems to be heat coming from the engine, perhaps.

Also, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not really wanting to sell the truck as I just purchased it last week. Right now I want to put some new tires on it, get the engine tuned up and start driving it around town for a while. If you really want to buy an early 50s Willys pickup, I can send you lots of leads as I have been shopping for one for quite a while. Let me know. They seem to sell for about $500-$2000 for one that is not driveable and for a driveable one $2000 to $40,000 depending on the condition and how much it has been restored. I really like the 1950-53 body style that has the 5 horizontal bars on the front grill and the tailgate has the WO stamped in it for Willys-Overland. Mine has a flat tailgate, so I will be hunting one of those down as well.

Thanks for all of your help so far - I really appreciate it.

I really like the truck but I'm in no position to buy one at the moment. I was kidding around with you about selling.

The gray thing is the alternator. That is what charges the battery and yes, most likely you would need to get it out of the way to see the VIN. You don't need it though. We know what the engine is, '72 or '73 Buick 350, and to my knowledge you won't find a manual for the specific car anyway. I never found one for my Skylark. Chilton makes a repair manual that covers all the US brands from 64-71 that has some onfo on the SBB (small block Buick). http://www.amazon.com/Chiltons-Auto...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1201532835&sr=1-1
It's a nice resource but IMHO the info you'll find on this website is so much greater that a comparison is hard to make. I also have a 1970-77 Chilton book but I'm guessing it hasn't been printed in a while because I couldn't find it on Amazon. There were very little changes to the 350 CID Buick between '71 and '73. Mainly the compression was reduced and they added some emissions equipment which is probably already removed from your engine.

EDIT: I just found a Chilton that covers '72-'79 http://www.amazon.com/Chiltons-Repair-Manual-1972-79-Service/dp/080196914X/ref=pd_sim_b_title_1
that would be better for you.
