We have been in contact with Quaker City dragway about a musclecar race the second weekend of June on Friday and Saturday. We will have a price on the track rental this week.We have not decided if we are going to have 2 seperate classes for pure stock and fast cars,or would it be better to mingle the classes together and have the cars labeled with a prefix on the windshield denoting ps,or fast. A June race has not been successful for Brad or Dan,so i feel that having both venues of racing would make it a success. All racing will be 2 out 3 shootouts, there will be no ladder in either class. We were also thinking about little shootout winner decals for the winner of each shootout.Any ideas on how to make this a success, and by that i mean at least 100 cars.Is this a good time to have it? Does anybody have problems with fast and pure stockers racing each other? Are there any other musclecar races planned that we dont know about? I dont think it is a good idea to get too many races,as then they all will suffer. We dont have anything in concrete yet as we are waiting for pricing on the track, and we did tell them that if this flies,we need the track sprayed 330 feet out,so for them to figure that in the price.Any ideas, problems,or conflicts?
John, the BPG just had their National Buick Event there, of which I was the Event Director. It's a neat track, great ownership partners, and clean facilities. It IS about .2 slower than Norwalk, but the hook is VERY consistent until the late night dew sets in. I think what your thinking is brilliant, and I hope it fly's. Jim :3gears:
Sounds good...I was going to do one, But heck you can do it  How about a musclecar "CAR SHOW" also. It'll allow you to collect a few bucks from guys who aren't willing to race their cars and inturn attract more spectators.
Mike,i would consider a show, but 3 things have bothered me over the last 18 years of racing at these musclecar races, and they are the guy who is at the show telling everybody how fast his car is"it would never hook up",or "it is too nice to race".Or the magazine writers would do an article on a car that was in the the show while there are a 120 guys with showcars that are racing that would love to have an article done on them.I hate to take any credit away from the real heros, and that is the guys who take there 20000-100000.00 cars out and run the crap out of them, for the pleasure of the people in the stands, and maybe the mention of thier name in a magazine. But maybe i could try and get over that
June Race ou: Great another chance to hear :Smarty: Did I Tell You I,m Going To Be On Tv" :Smarty: I,ll help any way I can
I like that idea John, I talked a little with Dan Jensen last week when PSMCDR was wrapping up, afterward it dawned on me that combining both classes for the June race would probably benefit everyone. I would show up and the advance notice would definitely be a plus.
I guess June of 05 gives me enough time I should be able to build something,or round something up by then :TU: We will bring something :Brow: !!!!! John......"Build it, they will come" :Smarty:
Great idea. Great idea, John. I'm not even sure you need separate classes if it's a best of 3 format for everyone. That happens almost automatically. A few of us are planning to enter our Pure Stock Cars in the FAST race in Commerce, Ga in a coupla weeks. I think that'll work and have no problem with Quaker City Dragway...except maybe that "Starter Nazi". Count me in.
I know this is your barbeque and all, John, and we appreciate y'all doin' the cookin', but allow me to speak for those of us West of Mississippi when I say "how about a race back our direction"? There's getting to be a pretty good following from the Midwest crowd, and every mile helps, or hurts as the case may be. I'm not gonna be greedy and suggest Memphis (which would be awesome!), but Columbus and especially Norwalk are one heck of a haul, but Quaker is worse! Granted, I got it easy compared to the Texas and/or Louisiana boys, but just thought I'd add my $.02... -------------------------- Hillbilly Racing Team "Hillbilly: the other white trash."
Not a bad point to consider John. According to the Stanton numbers 25 cars came from west and south west of Ohio while 3 came from east of Ohio. 5 from Toronto, 7 from Ohio, with Michigan cars being the rest. 25 cars is a block that should be accomodated if possible when looking for optimum turnout....I think anyway. As for me Quaker city is fine.....I'd rather see two P/S only events but o No:
Quaker City?....boy that sucks...did anyone discuss this?......If it's not held in my backyard I'm not going..... Oops....sorry I was channeling someone else for a moment..
Hey Donny, Keep quite, there are already too many voices in Brian's head! But seriously, I was looking at tracks in the NHRA and IHRA and running some milage on Mapquest. I used Minneaplois, Detroit, Norwalk, and Dallas as starting points. Other than Dallas, Byron, IL would be kind of a central track. If Dallas was included, Gateway in Collinsville, IL (St. Louis) would be about equal distance for everyone. Another possible track and the only one that could be closer for Rob would be Beech Bend outside Bowling Green. I am just throwing these ideas out there. Lord knows that Rob has been to a few more of these races than I. I am just trying to look at some other ideas. Let the beatings commence! :af: :spank:
Just when you thought I wasn't paying attention. No voices...no tourettes......just poking fun with a year old flashback..... Rusty....I didn't mean to imply John should have a race in Illinois or Missouri....I don't think Rob did either. I was just suggesting a farther West Ohio location might be better for car turnout based on where the cars come from. 25 cars is good to keep in mind but you don't want to forget the 50+ from Mi. either.
a better idea? Say instead of having the races in a more centralized location, how about we get Rob to move to the Indianapolis area. Like, say Columbus Indiana. All we have to do is convince him, his wife, kids and rest of the clan. Hey Rob, there's a lot more drag strips in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio! [hows that for a start?]ou:
You guys are right about the number of drag strips in Ohio and Indiana. From the websites: I.H.R.A. Ohio 1/4 mile Marion County Norwalk Dragway42 Quaker City Tri-State Indiana 1/4 mile Muncie Osceola N.H.R.A. Ohio 1/4 mile Edgewater KliKare Thompson Dragway National Trail Indiana 1/4 mile IRP Just a couple of choices to say the least. For mileage, I don't really care once I get the trailer lined up. It is about 800 for me to go to Stanton and about 750 for me to make it to Norwalk.
Thanks for everyone that responded.I did not realize that so few from Ohio have participated in these races.I know that i have had a hard time selling these races to most people.who simply wont race their musclecar. If Michigan is attracting over half of the entrants, then Michigan is where it should be. If people want to have two races a year, then someone is going to have tocome up with a plan. The reason that i said to have FAST cars at the June race (other than the fact that i like them)is because it would give whoever is putting on the event,a chance to not lose money.Second it would somewhat be a change of pace from the September race, with some different people and some different cars.A race in June will probably never be as successful as Dans, and that is ok,because that event is perfect, perfect time, perfect place, perfectly run ,etc. So the bottom line is,if Dan does not want to do two races, then somebody else from Michigan needs to step up to the plate, who,s it gonna be? And one other thing thing worth mentioning is that i think the race should be two days,i know that some of the fast races are only one day deals, and i think they should be two,as to give people that drive a long way a little rest time.
justa minute....... John G., don't give up on the Quaker City plan yet. Rob has had the same problem getting the members on his Yenko site to take their cars down the track at the Super Car Reunion as you are having with the Muscle Car show people. Once he gets them to the track though they're hooked! Maybe the car show idea could work. Suck 'um in with the car show angle, then let them race for what ever the extra charge is. Once they see how the P/S and S/A cars look and run (and get magazine ink!) perhaps some of the car show crowd will want to get in on the racing part too. :3gears: :3gears:
