I am getting ready to paint and have a question regarding the process of painting the door jambs. I have the doors off the car now. I planned on painting the door jambs and the inside of the doors then reinstalling the doors and shooting the whole car. My question is do I need to mask the body around the doors to keep the base and clear off the body? If I don't what do I need to do with the overspray on the body before I paint the car? I am afriad it will lift if I paint base over the clear overspray on the body. I was also wondering about masking the jambs before I reinstall the doors and spray the body. What is the best way to do this? Or should I paint the doors completely before reinstalling them? Then I could spray the entire car with the doors off and reinstall them after I paint them. Thanks for the help: Marty

I jambed my doors off the car and did the body jambs at the same time. The overspray that got on the quarter is on the primer so when I do a final wet sand/block that overspray will be taken care of. I'm going to use foam jamb tape(looks like a tube of foam with adhesive on it about as big around as a Sharpie pen). It squeezes into jambs and self sticks. I've also used 2" tape folded over backwards (long ways)to seal jambs. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I am heading out to the garage now to put a coat of primer on. What grit paper do you use on the body before you shoot the first coat of primer? (my car is not completely stripped in all spots. There is some bare metal and some factory primer/paint) I usually just run over it with 180 and then apply a coat of primer then block sand again with 180 and put another coat of primer then wet sand with 320 then apply the base coat and clear. Does this sound right? BTW I am painting with Black base. My first balck paint job and I want it to be perfect. Thanks: Marty

    Here's what I did!

Since you are painting the car Black, I would paint the inside of just the doors first. Here is a picture of a convertible I did. As you can see in the background I painted the exterior of the doors at the same time I did the body. I tapped the backside of the doors to keep the overspray off. Just as soon as I was done putting my last coat on I removed the tape from the insde of the door, so it wouldn't leave a tape line if any. I will post a picture of how I taped that so you understand what I mean.

The reason for this is Black is such an easy color to match unlike metalics, that you can paint the car apart and it will look just fine. I personally can't stand opening a freshly painted car and the door jamb has a tape line.

Just my opinion and 22 years of painting.

It gives you a really nice door jamb once your done. A constant flow of paint into the door jambs with no interuptions. Just my .02 cents :TU:

Thanks: I was considering doing that. I was a little worried about damaging the paint while reinstalling the doors. I have seen people tape up the critical spots to protect from damage during reinstallation. I would like to see how you taped the doors to protect from overspray. Marty

Hey Reynold!! Nice garage. I see you just can't bring yourself to strip the hood and decklid. It'll be the end of a piece of our history! :puzzled:

Looks like you have more than enough space to work or relax.
I see Bambi's dad and George Bush's singing trout hanging on the wall to keep a eye on you. :TU:

    Car is looking good! :TU:
