Re: I've got a massive 12v draw! Generally speaking, the minimum charging voltage is 13.5V, enough to overcome battery internal resistance (low, if it's a good battery) and connection resistance. 14.5 seems high to me, as a solid charging voltage. But there could be differences with the voltmeter. What I'm reading here is why I rebuild my own originals. Copper-plated aluminum wires? Weird. In fact, as far as I am concerned, this is a nonsense approach to current- carrying capacity. Boycott Chinese when possible...but I think we have already let the fox into the hen house on that one. As for the 5 years and 2000 miles, starting the car is the hardest thing on them. If he cranks it a lot, that takes the battery down. Then, if he drives it to charge it, that is really hard on the alternator. Have the starter checked, while you are at it. Hard cranking takes the battery down quickly, and these new batteries have the plates so close to the bottom of the cells that the fallout shorts them out sooner (and with a lot less, or NO warning).
Re: I've got a massive 12v draw! Ok- I 've finally gotten to the bottom of this. Both brand new "Standard" brand pt #VR-103 external regulators were defective right out of the box. The Delco brand D-663 regulator we finally got not only worked flawlessly, but didnt need to be adjusted at all putting out 14.6 volts right out of the box. When you get two brand new parts in a row defective, it really throws you. You start to second guessing your diagnosis and start chasing your tail. Thankfully my rebuilder bent over backwards and really helped me in figuring this out. No more draw
Re: I've got a massive 12v draw! Jason. Is standard made in mexico or china that's unreal 2 bad in a row you have nothing to work with any more but junk
Re: I've got a massive 12v draw! It said made in USA on the base, but I think only that particular component was made here. Or it could of been made in Usa, Japan?
Re: I've got a massive 12v draw! That's bizarre. Two defective regulators in a row? Wow. Standard Ignition used to be good stuff. Glad to hear you got it fixed.
