Well, my re-rebuilt 470ci nitrous race bullet, is up and running! I built a special run stand to make sure the oil pressure was OK before putting it in the car. Saturday was the big day, filled the tank with 110 octane, hung the 4inch exhaust out my garage door, fans aiming at the radiator, and timing set locked out at 34deg. and lit the candle, the beast lit right up!! Cam was already broken in on the ill fated dyno run, but held it at around 2000rpm for about 10 min, the external pump worked beautifully, oil press. was just under 40 psi with 10w 40 oil, at idle it was at 35psi, after operating temp. was achieved, winging the throttle alittle pushed it up to 60 psi, motor stayed steady at just over 180 deg temp. It sounded bad ass!! 4 inch exhaust with Walker Race Bullet mufflers, I'm sure it will really rumble under the car. Next step is to recheck valve lash ( solid lifter), tighten a few loose nuts & bolts, fire it up again, then stuff it back in the '65 where it belongs. My new goal is to try and have it race ready for the PSCA Races in Pheonix at the end of April, still quite a bit to do, but I did just clear the biggest hurdle with this build-up. I greatly appreciate all the knowledge and support from many of this sites' members, and the gurus in the Buick community who shared there stories, and advice, regarding the dyno failure of my motor. It was quite a learning experience though, I had to dig pretty deep into areas I have never been in building a motor. Can't wait to get back racing, it's been 3 years.....and we really don't need to mention how much this endever has cost me... I know at the race track, spanking those Chevies, and anyone else, will make it all worth while!!!! Gary Giessen
My pleasure to impart all my Buick knowledge to you Gary. Under my watchful eye I have watched you grow into a top notch builder. Anytime you need advice again regarding tdc, valve adjustment, firing order, head torqueing, putting gas in your fuel cell, etc, just let me know. All kidding aside, this has been a long time coming and I am sure that you will crush the competition. Good job!
WE MUST SEE PICS AND CONGRATS OR YOUR FIRING UP OF THE ENGINE THIS WILL BE SOON HUH !!!:3gears: :3gears: :TU: :TU: :TU:
Congrate's!!!!! I like the idea of the 'homemade stand' Been doing that for awhile myself. You get to check for leaks ( had a few on a couple of motors) and get to locate any noises that would be hard to find if it was in the car. PS~ post some pics and let us know how she runs!!!!Kelly :3gears:
That's great to hear .....I got to fired my motor up last night after doing balancing an new bearings It was the smoothest start up i ever had it was great....the best oil presure i ever had 38psi at idle at 185 deg in two weeks i'll be at the track to run it
Watch that oil still Its great to hear your back together again. I'm ready to see some good time slips. :3gears: :TU:
Sorry, I think I missed what happened on the dyno... What went wrong and what'd you do to resolve it? Glad to hear its goin good!:TU:
Here's alittle bit of back ground; had oil pressure problems, pressure never went over 30psi at 3000 rpm, I have an external belt driven oil pump, adjusting for more pressure had no affect, pulled a valve cover, found valve adjustment way out, dyno operator, thought we wiped out the cam, even though we were only running the outer springs due to high spring press. then after break in, we'd put in the inner springs. Paid alot of money for what was supposed to be a full dyno session instead of the $100 per hour that was mentioned for the break in, even though that's all that we did.... Took motor home, very dissapointed, building a Buick race motor is not cheap..Tore it apart to find the cam looked perfect, and to find the main bearings basically gone. Had to have the crank turned, crank guy thought "dirt" went thru the motor, well, someone else did the short block, and everything I attached to complete the build up was clean, so what happened??? The rods and mains were@ .0035, that loosness and the "dirt" seem to have been the problem. I had to redo everything, clean and clean again, then assemble. And now its' Back!!! 470ci, 13.6 to1 comp. Aluminum rods,TA track elems. (ported), SP2, 1050 dominator, vacuum pump, all oil mods. external wet sump Peterson oil pump, Big solid lifter cam, Lemons custom step headers, and the Nitrous Express Gemini Twin "unit".Should make around 1000hp on the bottle. I can post some pictures if I can send them to someone to post for me, I've tried before, but lose all qualit. Gary Giessen
Hey Kelly, I can't figure out how to send the pics. thru the V8 Buick site. Can you send me an E Mail off site to badbuik@cox.net. Thanks for the help Gary G.
Hey Gary, Two questions: 1. Can i get the specifics on your external oil pump and hook-up? 2. What have you done to your Dominator? I am buiding a 469 fr my rear engine dragser and I think these wil help. Third question for anyone: 3. Is anyone running a front plate and mid plate engine mount system, I need to know what is being done for a front plate mount. Thanks All and congrats Gary....:3gears:
Here's some info. ; The oil pump is from Peterson Fluid Systems (800) 926-7867, or they have a web site www.petersonfluidsys.com. It is a single stage wet sump pump for a Chevy, or many other applications, other models are available regarding mounting positions. It really moves some oil. I feed the pump from a -16 (1 inch) pick up welded into the back of the oil pan, then I run a scavange filter, -16 line to the pump, then -10 out to the external filter, then back into the block,-10, where the oil pressure used to be read from. Before I pumped oil into the motor, I took 2 quarts in a bucket, and with my cordless drill spinning the pump, pumped oil thru the pump back to the bucket, wow, it's alot of oil flowing. They also sell a oil pump vacuum pump combo. but I've been told they don't pull quite enough vacuum to show gains. My entire oil system, other than the oil pan that I made, is from Peterson, I think I've got just over $1000 "invested". The Dominator I have is a model 9375, 1050cfm, with nothig done to it, works great, I changed the jets like twice, I used to run a Qjet on my old motor, going to the Dominator, I thimk I picked up like 1/2 a second. I am not using a motor plate, thought about making "elephant ears" off the heads, but a high compression nitrous motor is trying to push the heads off, so I made solid motor mounts, and will make a mount to put off 2 of the trans bolts for extra support. Gary G.
Yes, I did block off the stock oil pump, I also tapped and plugged the passages inside the pump cover, and a plate over the stock oil pump pick-up mount on the block. I also used the block off plate to mount the external oil pump. The valve covers are from SRE in Wisconsin, found them thru this board, Steve is the owner, I don't have his info. with me, but you can do a search on this site, of oil pans or valve covers, and you will find his info. Gary G.
Hey Gary' The motor looks good! Hope it runs strong! Just to let everyone know, I am a dealer for Peterson Fluid Systems. I have been selling many of their components, as well as a complete oil system designed just for the big block Buick. This system, or "kit", was designed by myself, along with several key personal from Peterson. The complete kit includes aluminum valve covers, aluminum oil pan, billet removable -16AN oil pickup, billet pump mount, pump with or without vacuum, custom mandrel with drive nut, belt, pulleys, oil filter (K&N HP5001), remote oil filter mount, aluminum breather tank w/drain, and pop-off valve. The kit has just about everything needed except AN hose and hose ends. Anyone having any questions can call me @ 920-684-6776. Thanks, and good luck with the motor Gary!
