Well, I just got my 65 running again again aprox 2 years of just sitting. What I did was sold the engine that was in it, It has had a 455 in it since 1989. Anyway, I built that engine many years ago , back before I had a flow bench or dyno or anything. Long story short, When I pulled the engine out a couple of years ago , I threw it on the dyno just to see what kind of power it made, I guesstimated around 450 horse just going off the times the car ran at this altitude and other calculations through out the years. Well, it made 448 horsepower. That same short block I put alum stg-2 heads on and a coolrunner intake, and the darn thing made 585 horsepower, now I 'm really pissed that I sold it. The heads that were on it only flowed 240 cfm, boy, I've learned alot since 1989. Anyway, My new engine dynoed out at a tad over 540 horse, this is an iron head motor , I thought , that ought to be good enough for what i want. I'll tell you what, what a beast this car is now, it's still running the 2 year old gas that was in the tank, and boy does it stink. Anyway, no full throttle stuff yet due to the rotten gas , but this thing is an absolute monster. ANd remember , these are corrected powers to sea level , I'm at 4000 feet. I hear guys always wanting over 600 horse power for their drivers, man most of these guys have no idea what kind of crazy power that really is. To say the least, I am happy to have my baby back running, I've had this car since 1975.. Jim Burek P.A.E ENTERPRISES
Nothin' like steppin' on the gas and worrying about your seat back breakin'! Gotta Love It!!! 2 yr old gas in a nice new engine. :moonu: Kinda smells like the day after :beer and hardboiled eggs ???? Get it back on the road. Sounds like a winner. :TU:
That's great Jim! I think about what I want to do with the GS350 race/street car that will be coming soon and I can't imagine what even 500hp would feel like. I made one pass in Rick Henderson's Skylark back when it ran low 12's (but trans problems kept me from seeing 3rd gear, and a 12.XX) and the launch was scary... but in a good way.:Brow: Due to the cost of running quick right away, I'll be happy with 400 hp to start. ...now we just need you to finish up the '62 and get it on the road!:3gears:
That sounds great Jim! You built a big block for my '70 Skylark (the car in my avatar) a couple of years ago and I finally got the rest of the drivetrain done at the end of the summer and it feels awesome on the street. Mine made 545hp and 543 ft/lbs. I haven't had it to the track yet but, I plan on it in the spring after the car is painted. The idle of that solid cam puts a grin on my face everytime I turn the key, thanks Jim. Ken
Re: Re: It's ALIVE! [ ...now we just need you to finish up the '62 and get it on the road!:3gears: [/QUOTE] Well on the plus side there, I did finallyget the new axles for the 62, soo there is some progress there. LOL.. Seems like I have less and less time to work on my own stuff these days, same story as most of the other guys with their own shops I'm sure. Jim Burek
Awesome Jim: Now were gonna have to set you up with a match race:blast: Any takers? Hopefully I can have something running by our race in Pueblo if you decide to come (hint, hint) Anyway: Congratulations:beer Jim
Sounds cool, Jim! I am hoping for 500 hp on the dyno (which will be very soon). My problem will be traction. I shot my wad on the engine so it will take a while to get the traction issue taken care of. I am running the stock 3:08 open right now so traction will be a joke! I do have aftermarket upper and lower control arms and a 1 inch bar out back. They did make a noticeable difference. I am hoping for no parts breakage since I doubt it will hook hard enough to stress the rearend. But I won't be able to have alot of fun, just smoke! Brian :3gears:
That's great Jim! It's been a long time since I've seen your ride- of course our 67 has been sitting in the barn out back since the mid 90's after we split the trans case. Just flat ran out of extra cash to fix. Maybe this will inspire me to finally do something with it!
Hi Jay, Wondered if you were still around. Is Rusty still around? Don't know if you remember me You and Rusty rebuilt the engine in my 70 Way back around 86 or 87.
