Is there a safe way to keep front suspension compressed when jacking up front end?

Dude ya gotta check it. Being stranded in the middle of nowhere with six pounds in the boot would not be cool. Thanking the cop for the speeding ticket and not looking in the boot had the sphincter puckering enough. Ahh the eighties.
