Hopefully you can check where it is, with your track number: Fire at UPS facility in Hodgkins damages 2,000 packages By Jennifer Skalka Tribune staff reporter Published December 17, 2004 A fire at the mammoth UPS facility in Hodgkins damaged or destroyed about 2,000 packages Thursday, many of which undoubtedly had been destined for Christmas, but otherwise had little effect on one of the busiest days of the year at the shipping company's largest sorting site in the world. The blaze broke out just after midnight in one of the building's 1,257 trailers. As smoke billowed into the sky, the fire spread to six other trailers before being extinguished by firefighters from 14 neighboring communities. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Pleasantview Fire Protection District and UPS officials. Foul play is not suspected, officials said. Most of the tainted packages were en route to two New Jersey locations, Parsippany and the Meadowlands, with the rest going to DeKalb or Denver. "Some of them were burned, some were water logged," said Mike Johl, community services manager for the company's Chicago Area Consolidation Hub, a 1.5 million-square-foot facility located at 1 UPS Way. UPS is urging people who sent packages to those four locations to go to the company's Web site for more information. I just checked on my package (Rod's gift) and it said it's on a truck to delv. I feel bad for anyone who's package was in the fire. I'm sure it isn't going to be easy to get it replaced.
I'm just nervous given the destination, as I have some ebay stuff that's on its way, including a set of valves that my friend gave me money to get for him :shock:
Phew! The ebay stuff I sent out on Wed. went through Des Moine Iowa. I suppose they will deny claims, stating that if properly packaged, the items should have withstood fire and water.
One more reason to avoid UPS.......I'm expecting something also that shoulda been here today.........now I'm worried also :shock:
