The Buick 300 CI engine was the factory V8 for that car. So, yes, it is a 300. Current power depends on the orginal low or high compression verision, and what mods have been made. The 4bbl version was 250 hp (gross) from the factory.

Most owners keep the 300; some others install a Buick 455 of other larger engine. That's your choce.

    300

The 300 with the 4bbl is a good set up. I raced more and broke less with this set up than any that I have ever had. I brought home so many trophies that my wife threatened me with bodily harm if I brought home another one. I t ran in the old G/compact stock/automatic class. Advertised 250 hp, ran against Cameros and firebirds with 250 advertised hp. There are two areas of concern with this engine. 1 Run a strong mixture of anti freeze in it or the aluminum heads and intake will corrode. 2 the rods are mallable iron so limit the rpms to 5500. The 4bbl eng has 11to1 compression pistons in it. The 2 bbl pistons are 9.5 to 1. The trans is a power glide, basicly and the rear end gears are tall. usually 2.93 or so.
If you take one of these cars to the factory specs for the optional 4bbl eng, put heavy duty shocks, and springs, plus about a 3.42 or 3.56 posi diff. you could probably tear the stock class up at the drag strip and not spend a fortune doing it. :Brow:
