I was just wondering, I have a low-around type budget. Lets say I have 80 bucks(actually 70, but i could make 10 dollars in a day if i have to), and I already have one cherry bomb muffler. Since I have one, which I bought a few months back, and intended to put one cherry bomb muffler on, but since they are only 20 bucks a muffler, it fits my budget. And I heard that dual exhaust increases hp a little and helps the car put out the carbs. Now all I need to do is have them put on my car at the local muffler/exhaust shop. First of all, what will the dual exhaust do besides add a little hp? Will it increase fuel mileage? Will it actually flow better and make the engine more healthy? What good will it bring? I know cherry bombs aren't the best, but hey, what else can you do with an 80 dollar budget?o No: Your thougts and opininons. BTW, my engine is a 231 V6, with stock manifolds. -Cody
Cody, If you have a Single exhaust, and you're switching to a Dual exhaust, you WILL notice the difference!:eek2: The car will perform a lot better, it will be more responsive (faster acceleration, better idle, etc.). Fuel economy may or may not improve, depending on how YOU drive it.:TU: It will be LOUDER, with the Cherry Bombs, but not too bad. That was my first Dual Exhaust system on my '71 Skylark, and it just had a real "throaty" sound.:bglasses: I will tell you this, though, $80 won't help with taking it to an exhaust shop, unless you know the owner or somebody who works there, that will do you a FAVOR! A Dual Exhaust system is going to cost you around $300!:Smarty: I've had 3 of them done, already!:Smarty: Be Prepared...:TU:
$20??? price must of gone up. You use to be able to get them for $9.99. Ya man Id go duals in a sec. Now if your gonna be using store bought pipe with slip fit joints don't bother with clamps. I like to use JB weld to seal the joint. It works well, give it a clean install and isn't gonna come lose or leak. I just re did my Firebird exhaust and it look so much nicer without them nasty clamps that miss shape the pipe and eventually rust, come lose n cause leaks.
ya i can vouch for the difference. my skylark had single exhaust with the 350 in it... once that was changed to 2" it felt like a whole new car... then i put the 455 in and changed the exhaust to 2.5"... didn't notice much of a difference from the 2" to 2.5" on the 455 though.. other than sound it didn't do much on the butt dyno. each one cost around $300-400 .. i think $360 for the 2.5" if i recall correctly that included mufflers, chrome tips and piping from the headers back.
Hey I reread your post ...... Forget the duals . I feel you won't gain anything but throwing your money out ......
OK, I admit it, I am a little poor right now as far as money goes, but if I have to, since I know Mr. Clark(practically rebuilt my transmission, and did a lot of other work, and has best quality and cheap prices, all for 140 dollars), and he could probably put a dual exhaust system on for a reasonable price that us poor folks can afford, although it won't be "cheap". I'll call him today if he's at the shop to ask about my brakes and mention dual exhaust if I find out I can come up with some more money between now and when he gets it in to do the brakes. thanks -Cody
Advice: be careful with the studs in the exhaust manifolds, that the head pipe bolts to. Very rusty and brittle. When I ran manifolds, I drilled out the studs and used a through bolt. It can be done with the engine in, but it is a big pain.
Personally, I wouldn't do it. A stock 231 won't run any better with dual exhaust. Save you money and put it towards something useful. HTH
Thanks for all the opinions etc. Ummm, called him at 10 o'clock, he said he doesn't really do exhaust work, but he said for me to check with a guy in hamilton(exhaust pros) and see what estimate they'll give me. Right now, I don't care for chrome tips or anything fancy, just good quality system. The muffler on my car now has holes in it, it's rusty, it's loud, don't sound bad, but don't sound too good either, so I'll either buy another cherry bomb muffler and have dual exhaust put on, or i'll just have single exhaust put on with the cherry bomb muffler and say it's good to go. The stock muffler and exhaust just ain't cuttin' it:grin: Thanks -Cody
I'm a little curious on what would happen if you took out the mufflers and ran just pipes? My Centurion is fitted with dual exhausts and it's quiet as a mouse. My girlfriend likes it, and I kind of do too, but rumble is rumble:bglasses: Kimson
Thanks for the info. and opinions everyone. I'll most likely be putting one muffler on anyway since my budget is low and my old one needs replaced. Besides, if I ever do get a good budget with a lot more money, I'll most likely spend it on a swap for a 455 or 350, or something important like that. Thanks. -Cody
If you can get away with it, straight 2'' pipe to the back with turned down(?) exhaust tip, no muffler or have the straight pipe cut short and stick the cherry bomb on it then the turn down. I had a straight pipe on my regal (same engine), did a little better with power and since it's just a straight pipe, it's not much work for them.
I think we all missed the V6 part. Don't put duals on a 6. And never go larger than 2.5. You can get your self a dual tip muffler to get the same look.
